How is it legal???????
In a ditch?...where will it end
If they don't stick out past the arches/ don't rub the arch they're legal. It's a bit mad alright but they would need to ban any aftermarket wheels to ban them. Hopefully that won't happen.
I had some rims once that had been widened in a better way than banding. The center section of the wheel had been cut out and welded to a wider section rim.Voila, possilby far easier to align than banding.
In a ditch?
It's a bit greyer than that surely? Can pass an MOT with something that doesn't meet constructions and use (fenderless rods for example) and even if construction and use doesn't specifically cover it... in the case of more extreme stretches (i.e. beyond what the tyre manufacturer recommends) i can't see an insurance company offering cover if fully informed
I have done some pretty thorough reading about them and quite a few companies will insure them, including brentace which is who I intend to take my policy out with. Regarding the law.. Their is a thread on retrorides where someone emailed vosa or whoever and they basically said they are legal providing they are structurally sound, which is a bit vague, but that's why I want to get them made by someone with awesome wheel banding skills
I think having them too wide would look silly, but as it stands I like dishy wheels and reckon banded steels are r r r rad! And even them ridonkulous camber cars.. is it not all about the owners choice? I'm sure everyone has done something which others would consider foolish or ugly to their cars or whatever..
Cheers for the responses, I will take a gander in past threads and see if I can get any leads!![]()

Only to the point where that choice impinges on others,
if customizing reduces the handling or safety of the original car, then I don't want it on a public road.
Well, the police have the power to order you to take your car to the nearest mot centre and if they're happy with it your fine, they can really only make sure that nothing will fall off. It isn't exacty unusal for a car to have some minor adjustments made before the insurance assosor sees it.
BTW, I hate banded wheels, just thought I would point this out incase anyone thinks I'm defending them![]()
Not really looking to do them myself as my welding is probably not up to scratch
But I am quite keen to get my hands on some.. Don't want to pay bandedsteels.com prices and I have also read a whole bunch of bad reviews.. I am on JamesP's waiting list on retrorides but it's been about four months now and he hasn't answered my messages.. so I'm looking elsewhere.
Does anyone know of anyone doing them in the North West at all? Or does anyone on here make them?
Cheers![]()
