Which petrol

Should I use E10 or E5 petrol in the lawnmower. Obviously Aspen would be my preferred but at the end of the season, not right now at the beginning. Besides, I need to get the Bank Loan first!

I always use e5 if I can but if I haven't any then E10 goes in but all my stuff is ancient so I'm not too fussy

I put E5 in ours, as the remaining in the autumn will stay there until the spring. We’ve got a robotic mower now, so doesn’t get much use, maybe once in the spring.

Well, that looks like it is a good idea so I will get some. First off though I need to go get a petrol can in order to actually get the petrol I need as it has ran out :-(

On a more positive note it actually involved welding before I could actually use it as the handle frame had snapped. Pics to follow later.

having collected a number of chucked out mowers only to find the carb bowl furred up and clogged needing a thorough clean to get them working from ethanol damage, if you are definitely going to leave it over winter with fuel in it then use e5
there was an article out a while ago (in practical classics i think?) where someone tested the ethanol content in fuel and found it to be significantly lower than stated e5= 1% and e10= 3% etc so using e10 wasn't really a problem, however lately another report was that done tested fuel form thew same places only to find the % of ethanol has risen much closer to the stated amount so
as premington states it would be a very good idea to run it out of fuel when storing it especially over winter or you might find nasty surprises the following spring

One of my cars has been off the road for nearly 2 years, parked up with E10 with the fuel warning light on and started fine the 5 times it's been started since then, I did put 4 litres of E5 in it for a treat last week as I will be taking it for mot next week, probably pointless.

Does your float bowl have a drain? Quickest way to run it out of petrol.

I use whatever is in my can. End of the season I empty the tank and run the mower till it stops. Two pulls in April and away she goes

not sure that is correct, it is only Aspen that is zero.

I use Aspen fuel in my chainsaws and my lawnmower, after having starting problems years ago because of blocked carburetter jets.
I can understand the price difference against normal pump fuel.

I don't mind paying the extra cost, if it means I don't have spend time striping carbs at the begining of the year to get things running.

I do the same run everything dry, plus use Stabil additive,

Our local honda dealer get mowers in for servicing (mower wont start) water in the fuel or poor fuel, not that I want to start a which fuel debate, I always use tescos and have no issues

Just tonight I put fresh petrol in a whacker plate which has been laid up for 3/4 years, started with little effort apart from 8/9 pulls once I gave it time for the carburettor to fill up.

Wash out all the alcohol.

I have been told to use e5 Esso as it is better refined than some other brands, I don't think that is whats in my can meantime tho.

Balderdash!

My mowers get fed with whatever petrol is cheapest, just like my cars. I live in the UK, so fuel quality is tightly controlled.

Don't take this advice in the USA or outside the OECD.

I tend to add only enough fuel to complete the task at hand, so I run the tank dry every session and definitely at the end of the mowing season.

But hey, what do I know?

If you are that hung up about alcohol, just buy 25 litres or so of fuel at a time and separate out the alcohol.
