Painting a plastic bumper

So my daughter passed her passed her test last month and 3rd day of driving on her own managed to clip a transit on a roundabout , we hoped it would be able to be sorted outside of the insurance company but the quotes he had started at £3700 and lowest was £2600 so had to declare it

This is the damage , stripped it down the weekend and bar a few broken clips everything behind looks ok



I found a headlight for £50 and a pattern bumper shell for £110 in primer , there where some second hand ones but not in white and not without some damage

Im going to have a go spaying it to save some money ive painted vehicles before but in 1k and all were military it really wasnt a good finish needed

I have all the spray gear even a room in my workshop to do this and a airfed mask

My question is as its such a small thing can I get away with using a 2k rattle can ? I really dont need showroom finish as car is only worth £1.2k anyway

will I need a primer too or will the primer it comes with be ok ?

They will probably write it off i can buy it back but its gonna be marked as a CAT N after that I guess , she needs the car ASAP so will be the quickest way to sort it too

If time and money are an issue, a headlight, boiling water to straighten out the bumper and a clean will probably be enough to get it back on the road.

Coverage from rattle cans isn't normally great, IMO you'd be better off getting 250ml of 2k mixed, probably be cheaper than 2 of those rattle cans.

Some of the main mounting points have snapped off , ive got a plastic welder but tbh its gonna be easier to just blow it over i'll try the local paint supplier just need to get the correct code off the car

I just wondered if it would be easier as never used 2k before

2K comes with safety issues.

Are there no replacement panels on Ebay or at a local scrap yard? What Renault model is it? If it's not worth much she might be able to live with a different coloured bumper.

I have a room in my workshop i use for grinding/welding/spraying that has a 10" extractor fan it creates really good negative air pressure in there and an Air fed mask somewhere is there anything else to worry about?

Checked local scrappys nothing ebay wants 140-160 for a secondhand one the wrong colour probably with broken bits too , for me it makes more sense to paint a new one

If she claims on insurance she will have to pay excess which may be more than the pattern parts and some paint.
If it's pre primed bumper it should be ok to go straight on with colour after a scuff with grey scotch pads and good wipe down with panel wipe.
If the car is a simple solid colour then go for 2k direct gloss with fast hardener.

Is the air fed mask compressor suitably located away from any spray fumes?

Rattle cans are generally rubbish and will cost more.

The bumper, if it comes in decent 2k primer with no defects, will just need a light scuff, panel wipe and tack rag directly before painting,

Id first check, if thinners is able to wipe off the primer, then I would say a couple coats of epoxy primer would be wise.

Its solid white colour, so ideally you would use a direct gloss paint for best durability and least faff.

Ask your paint shop if they have any fast cure paint systems. I was greatly impressed by the ProXL xpress505 clear coat, touch dry in 25 mins and cured in 3 hours. I assume similar would be available for DG.

Make sure to get some practise on something else first, just to refesh your skills with spraying. I didnt realise how much I had forgotten when I went straight in with mine and it caused many hours of repeat prepping the panel.
