Stuck Sprocket

If it was threaded on, how would you be expected to undo it to service the seal?
If that were the case I'd expect it to be shaped allowing a tool to be used to unscrew it.

its just odd its definately not part of the main part of the motor and the seal is clearly in that part , I'll get a wire brush on it tomorrow just in case the are some holes for a tool

The new seal isn't integral to a new metal housing is it? I just wonder if that whole thing pops off and is replaced with the new seal?

It kinda reminds me of the two part seals on the tractor hub that have an integrated wear ring.

I guess thats possible but whether one is available after 31 years is another matter . I live in hope that it will pop off i suspect it will be another fight

Yeah. I half expect it to knock off but its just a guess and would be very gentle until i'd seen a replacement to help confirm the setup!

Could you get a bearing puller in the small gap and put a tiny bit of pressure on to see if it looks like it might pull back? Still a risk of damage i guess.

First im going to see if I can rotate it be it push fit or screwed it should move with some big stilsons on it

looking at the picture of it my fist instinct was it'll come off with big of hammering....

but then again... it's weird it doesn’t have anything to hold it on - if it came loose/forwards it would rub the back of the sprocket, so would normally expect something extra to stop that?

Its not what i was expecting at all , i was hoping it would be bolted on but this is definitely a separate part from the main housing but there are no features to it so makes no sense

Ill get a wire wheel on it later in case something is hiding

if it was threaded on it would be risky as if something jammed in there it would wind out and lock that track , if it just presses in its going to be a right pain to remove after 30+ years

either way it should move if i try to unscrew it

Given the application, I suspect that could be a pressed on flange to provide additional protection for the front of the motor.
I can only find images of different spec MCS3 motors with noticeably different noses, so not much use to know what the nose of your motor should look like.

@Rannsachair might be able to shed some light on it..

If that was factory fitted and screwed on it would have a couple of notches for a bit C spanner i reckon, i'd go for a press fit hence the small gap at the rear, few old screwdrivers or wedges first after a light tap round with a brass mallet

Ok big update after application of a wire wheel i can confirm that its actually all one casting which is the worst thing really as the only way to change the seal is taking the motor apart and frankly im not going to do that as I need the machine next weekend . If it gets worse then i can revisit it in the future at least i can clean the shaft up it should come off easier in the future

I was Product Engineering Manager at Bosch Rexroth in Glenrothes 2002 to 2004, that motor design predates me, the MCR radial piston motors with a shaft output typically have a seal that can be replaced on the external face, though we would make specials to meet customer requirements. Sorry cannot be much help on this one.

I will drop a message to an old colleague who may recall that motor and let you know if he can advise.

no what looks below to be separate parts is actually one housing so seal needs the whole motor strip down to change

Thats amazing thankyou so much , I guess there was no requirement to make the seal easily removable so it wasnt designed in having hole drilled and tapped in that area as it might weaken it maybe.
Not sure i would fancy tearing it down now but at least I could in the future if it ever gets worse

Aye its a swashplate axial piston motor, apparently they sold lots to fishermen for winches.

The service dept in Glenrothes still get the odd one in to recondition.
