Garden drainage?

how would i do that?

Rainwater drainage can be pumped to, discreetly, but not foul....
The ground in these parts is a wide variety of clays, sands, gravels, and all sorts of god-wottery.
Doubt that it is as bad where you are, and digging out a soakaway might suffice.
Any free-flowing exit will do.

This was my initial idea, dog it out below the clay and see what the drainage is like...it will either drain and then I can fill it back up with whatever is going to assist drainage, or if it still doesn't drain away, it's already dug out for whatever needs to happen next

It'll be a start on a pump chamber into which water can be led, and thence pumped out to the existing rainwater arrangements.
If it doesn't drain on its own accord, that is.....

Not allowed to connect run off water to foul sewer now. It happened a lot in the past until relatively recently. My mums house (built 1978) does this. It is the main reason that sewage dumping takes place.

Anyway, unless there is a lower spot for French drains to discharge, there is no really cheap cure for this.

If low spot not available, then really its down to building a soakaway IF you can break though the clay layer, either that or remove all the clay if the layer is thin enough, and it a feasible.

If you can break through, you must line the soakaway with geotextile before filling with gravel or those cage thingies (cant remember what they are called) otherwise you will be back to square one within a couple of years.

This house dates back to not long after Newport became a mainstream town, rather than just a port town...apparently the guy that built it owned the majority of land around Newport, had the idea to build houses, but then went bust about a third of the way through and sold up, eventually the rest of the land fell to the council.

I'm fairly confident I can get through the clay. Didn't think about a membrane though so thanks for that.
