We have a large Oak tree at the bottom of the garden, The lady over the end of our garden went to great pains to tell me that we couldn't have anything done to it as bats roost in it! The trouble is that our next door neighbour has young kids that play in the garden and the branches are overhanging their side by quite a margin, I'd hate it if the branches fell on them, It's thrown a few large branches in the past, I've a greenhouse directly under it, Luckily the branches stayed on my property and missed the greenhouse too as a Bay Laurel tree shot up between the greenhouse and Oak tree canopy!
I'd love to get the height reduced by at least half and then remove all the branches so that it could start again as a smaller tree!
There's two greenhouses but the far one is directly below it!!

Oak trees often have a TPO, Worth checking on. Might need permission to trim.

I'm pretty sure they are protected as Elms and other native hardwood trees

Nope there is no outright protection for oaks specifically, but if your in a conservation area and the stem is above 3", you will then need council permission.
Bats like trees with hollows and vertical slots under the bark - I'm no ecologist but that usually means dead trees or ones with significant decay, and yours looks from a distance, a healthy example, so doubt theres an issue unless somone has a bat box in it.
Anyway cutting it in half is awful for the tree.
you can get somone in to remove deadwood without needing permission - that will remove most of the risk.

I've cut a few trees down in size over the years but they're much smaller than the Oak!
This one was around five feet tall when I bought it, It was bigger than that when the original owner had it, He fell out of the door drunk and snapped it!!
And a smaller Oak!

The Oak in the pic had very few leaves, I ended up cutting about 90% of each leaf off and six or seven weeks later there was three times as many!!

Just lifted the lid on the compost bin, it’s worm world
Mine was like that early last week . today not so many but the birds loved them .
Each on of those little grainy blobs on the lid is a viable worm egg.
If you have kids
Get half a dozen and damp a small square of kitchen towel in a sealable plastic container with distilled water or moisture from off the lid if it is covered in droplets of condensate .
After carefully collecting and transferring the eggs keep the container at about 13 oC , you can take macro photos every few hours and see the amazing life cycle and hatching .
A young American lad I know did exactly that and used it for his science /biology thesis . Getting him top marks as it was very detailed info including which worm species it was .

What’s the best treatment for wood handles on garden tools? Bearing in mind the aggressive nature of their use I don’t think varnish is the best thing, so linseed oil or what?
Looks like it’s doing well. Have you had any nuts yet?
The reason I ask is because we have a full size tree which produces nuts but the blinking squirrels manage to get them before we do.
