The one at the back left (Ash) is destined to be a fruit bowl and is by far the biggest thing I've turned on my lathe. It started off as a 305 mm × 75 mm blank, but I had to cut it down:

The one at the back right (slightly spalted Beech) was done mainly as a test of using masking tape and superglue to hold a sacrificial foot on (which worked beautifully on that small bowl, but gave way when turning the bigger one in the bottom right; thankfully it was recoverable). The bigger spalted beech one had very noticeable spalting on one side but not much at all on the other so I turned it with a fairly flat bottom (and undercut inside edges: a first for me) in order to keep as much of the patterning as possible. It's probably about time to hang the lathe from the ceiling joist where it lives and do something else for a bit, but it's been nice using the recently-upgraded home-made lathe and I'm happy with how it's working.

Asked to help a MIS, a bit of a drive.

They have n old wood press and some dies, it just needed new cable and a good clean.

This is what I made, with their only clean dies.

Following the wine making, (those of a nervous disposition should look away now) I decided to have a crack at making a chimney cowl. Grabbed a sheet of stainless, a seized old bearing and the Lidl plasma cutter. That and a scrap 14" dia brake disc:

Some bits of the circumference cut perfectly, others didn't, I think the spring clip on the plasma torch "shifts":

Just to buck the trend I decided to do some WELDING!



Couldn't for love nor money find my roll of 0.8mm stainless mig wire . Nowhere to buy any 0.8mm flux core stainless wire either. Thus I decided to try some old 316 rods I had. I put one radial slit in the disc bent it into a cone with a "lap"

First attempt was dire, bin job. Actually lower down it wasn't too bad. With this on MMA stick:

I relented and shot down Halfrauds, £20 for a 500g roll of st/st Sealey mig wire. Plasma'd another disc. No lap this time but welded with a nom gap. My trusty old Clarke 130TE and Hobby Gas. The rear side is not pretty! Tried the bnib, bargain B&D power file, not much good on this:

If by the spring tip you mean the silly stand off - you don't need it.
If your cutting tip has a x shaped groove in it it is a drag tip, designed to be dragged on the surface of the metal with no stand off.

Kick latches for stables. The stand off distance is on purpose.
Just need some 10mm rod to arrive to cut and weld in for the over-centre stay.

Looks like I've knackered the X bit. Replaceable?

Use a fine flat file to flatten the face then use th files cutting edge to remake the cross + slots . Loosen the tip and remake the hole cleanly .

Perhaps also get some spares for it , they are not too expensive from the likes of ALI or Temu occasionally they are available in LIDL at twice the price for half the quantity.

I painted a frame and put in Methany's shirt.
bundle up the rest and put the back on.

That's useful, I didn't realise that! Then again, I've never used the stand off

When it gets like that on my hypertherm torch, i dig it out with a scriber and carry on.
