I think they're for parcels going down levels of a building. You still see them in use at airports going down from the airbridges.

I think they're something to do with grain but not sure. @Seadog might know.

Could be but these are very old.

I've seen them in cotton and hosiery mills before for getting products down quickly (and safely).
