I have rebuilt vintage marine Diesel engines and I've always wondered why these * train* engines take so long to start and produce so much smoke , can anyone explain why ?
* I know I just called it a train .
The Deltic you’ve replied to is different to most other railway locomotives because it has a unique engine format which is valveless, uniflow scavenged, features opposed pistons and is supercharged, not turbocharged. It’s a two stroke and as such is built from banks of the same power assembly arranged laterally.
It was also used in *boats* !

Walking down a street somewhere in the vicinity of the Browns's stadium, this this looked to be moving when viewed through the branches of a tree - had to stand still to realise it wasn't, and then work out what it was. Photo taken from a near enough 5000 ton (said so on the plaques at either end) steel frame bridge above it
