Thought I might start a thread about starting a build, This is what happens when you retire, you find little projects you saved up over the years and determine to start them, the trick of course is to finish them. @brightspark thinks I am going to start and then leave it, I have never started anything yet and not finished it, not that I can recall anyway. So I am going to make a start and just keep going, thats the plan anyway:



This is what you get in the box, that and the drawings and the vaguest set of instructions you ever saw, right now the only uncertainty I have is what colour to paint it and where the hell did my Milwaukee die grinder go?

I shall of course update the thread as I go along. Ph yes, just for clarity this is the Stuart 10 H (horizontal single cylinder, this one:

He never mentioned that did he any way why are you not making it all from scratch , you've got all the gear
@doubleboost 's Mrs has knocked up a couple of nice models recently .

I like the Leo Sampson (of the excellent Tally Ho youtube series) approach: it'll be ready in two years, but it's a rolling two years from whenever you're asked. The great thing about that approach is that when you do finish it, you're guaranteed to be two years early!

Well as a matter of fact I just might, believe it or not as a twelve year old boy (a very long time ago) I built a vertical boiler. From scratch, using bits of pipe I found around the dairy, my inspiration was a "General Electric Steam Generator" we had at the time that my father used to start off with coal then get it on coke for the rest of the day. It always made me wonder (as a boy) why an electric company would make and sell such a thing. Anyhow I sourced all of the miniature steam and water fittings from an engineers supply shop just off Brunswick Street, I think, in Stockton. I saved a lot of pocket money for them. I remember it worked well but all I could do with it was produce steam.
How I didn't kill myself back then is one of the wonders of my life, I will admit to having a couple of very enthusiastic goes at it!

I've got one of them in a biscuit tin in the garage. Slightly more advanced than yours, but not massively.

Started it about 40 projects ago, about 30 of those are still unfinished

But not the machined kit.
Just don't get too side-tracked with whatever the die grinder is for.

i have a set of norman spink castings for a 5 inch gauge simplex o6o steam loco . bought them 50 years ago and there still in the bag i bought them in thats as far as it got . i did build a kitcar from scratch in 6 weeks mindevery night and weekends hard at it in the garage

I thought you might have set your goals a bit higher, with something like a mini internal combustion engine

(if you do want to have ago at one, I have a few years worth of Strictly IC mags buried somewhere, and it's successor Model Engine Builder)

I have my eye on a Japanese kit for a V8, I need to send her stronger hints maybe....

As always you are very generous, when I enter my dotage I shall send for the mags! :-)

I would add model engineering drawings with known errors are never updated so check the dimensions match the parts they are supposed to fit.
