My advice would be to get her the cheapest possible fork, Chinese are ideal, the tines bend or snap under the least bit of pressure, if the handle hasn't broken already of course. I learnt this years back not long after we had bought our current house. I came back to find MrsH tidying up the front garden at the exact moment she was bouncing up and down on the end of her long handled fork. "Can you get this root out?" She says. "Well of course says I", but I thought I'd just have a quick look first. Turns out it was the Lead mains water pipe just before the stopcock.......

Using them to dig out small tree roots on a slope. Uses a pick axe and mattock too, but doesn't like chopping up the roots as it encourages more to grow.
In that case you might as well just buy a cheap metal handle fork, with steel tines, and bend the tines back whenever she bends them.Both !

A digging bar woulbe probably be a better bet than a fork for pulling tree roots though.

Might be worth taking a look on eBay, and seeing if there's any proper old kit around.
Or, better still, take a trip to France and get hold of some of their locally manufactured hand tools, which will be perhaps odd to our gaze, but absolutely excellent in the hands of a skilled gardener.....

Used to be a lifetime guarantee (glad you spelt that word - I can never, ever, spell it correctly first time) - my mum bought me one and it snapped where the socket joined the body.
