Garden/Contractors fork recommendations

SWMBO needs yet another "garden" fork. have tried various different ones including those described as "Contractors" but none seem to last any more than a month or so.

The last one was a Spear & Jackson (made in PRC) NEVERBEND.

Unfortunately it was similar to stating that Titanic was unsinkable. She needs something that the Navvies of old used to use to dig canals and railway tunnels.

Any suggestions anyone ?

We have bought a few Ox shovels and spades, they are about as HD as you can get without the silly price tags. SWMBO proof forks

they didnt use forks they used picks and spades only gardeners used forks when the ground was split up enough for a fork to be used

my advice dig through a few times with the spade before the fork gets used

once broken up enough

Note the marketing speak in that fluff. A 'British standard' is rather different to a 'British Standard'. The latter is a published document that has a number in it somewhere. The former is an industry-established common practice.

It would be interesting to see theri response when asked to state the (formal) British Standard which theri product exceeds.

Contractors tools like folks are made for todays fairies because getting a little blister results in site stut down and health and safty inductions for a eeek. Been a grounworker/builder all my life..i will get the name of my tools. They are good and taken plenty of old school graft..

Had a stainless Wilkin Sword spade and fork from Wickes years ago, like early 90s.

One tine broke off the fork about 30 years later and the fibreglass handle broke off the spade about the same time.

Had my money's worth, they were good.

I've found a wood & steel construction only rule is a good starting point, when looking for such. Plastic or such handles are ne'er use nor ornament. They bend & twist.

got my shovels and gripe from autojumbles that are over 50 years. old the steel is hard and springy better than the soft thick crap there made of now just bought new wooden handles for them for a tenner a pop and fitted them

What's she breaking on them? Shafts or tines?

All of the forks I've broken have been through misuse (Levering out tree roots, rubble or stones etc). If she's breaking them on a regular basis a forks probably the wrong tool for the job?

Personally I find a wooden handle is far nicer in the hand if your using it for any time.

Cost v durability I've found spear and Jackson stuff to be OK for garden / allotment use (can't comment on shoveling rubble though).
