There again you could buy a milling machine for the price of a decent set of files these days!!!

In seriousness, they appear to be a similar price to the good quality F. Dick ones (from Dictum), but without the hassle of having to buy them from Germany.

Edit: looking at the website more close, they are the good quality F. Dick files, nice!

My friend the jeweler likes Vallorbe for very fine files, and was pointing out to me how eye watering the price of their engineers files was the other day.

Acme threaded parsnips and 1/4 inch partially parted small swede. It might be a bit difficult putting a thread on peas & tomatoes though .

Cut a thread lefthanded and righthanded on a morse taper using an eight start thread counter for both threads ..it will look knurled if you use a smallish thread

We did the same when I was learning fine furniture making and renovations . Most times a piece would be fully made in a reasonable carcassing pine & ply wood & also with recycled veneers steamed off old furniture .

Working on a site where they make Eurofighter parts and got some canopy offcuts just the right size for some shelves for my sons bedroom. Was a pain to cut to length as 20mm Perspex but must be tougher than normal
Did a test on an offcut and a M6 tapped hole was more than strong enough for what i need

Needed to drill and tap 3 holes accurately in each end of 3 pieces 10" x 36"

I could have just marked it of and drilled freehand but needed to make it as complicated as possible so fired up the Bridgeport

Probably a better way to to do it but cobbled this together

I think the beauty of turret mills is really in the relative speed and ease that you can make setups to use the flexibility it has.

A Deckle FP or clone is both way more flexible [on paper], and available in sizes which are way more heavy duty.

But in the time you've dicked about finding and mounting the various bits needed do a peculiar job perfectly...

You could have already done the job on a Bridgeport 95% to 99% as good as the Deckel and moved on with your day.

I always figured that convenience of use was why the Bridgeport became a small workshop staple for commercial and hobby environments alike.

Needed a T-slot adapter for my big rotating Vice on the bridgeport , already had slots in the base but they were 25mm and needed to be 16mm luckily had some 25mm accurate bar so just needed to mill to size



Found a use for the second mill drilling and tapping into the base I knew 2 mills was necessary

I've been sitting at home for some couple of months now with drop foot in my right foot.
Can't drive the lorry like this, so plenty time to spend in the workshop.

Made two clamps as per Doug Gray's design.
All made from bits of steel I had except the jaws. Had to buy some 30x30mm aluminium for that.
Cut the legs out of a sheet of 3mm steel I've had for ages with the plasma. Tacked them together and milled them to final shape.

Another bit of the aluminium I used to make a magnetic holder for a 50mm DI.
The Southbend doesn't have a dial on the carriage handwheel. I do have the micrometer carriage stop which I use a lot, but that has a maximum stroke of only 19mm. The 50mm DI will save some time setting distances with the carriage. A poor man's DRO.
