Does anyone have a relatively cheap (say sub £100) metal detector that they could recommend.

I need to find a buried metal PRV on my water pipe. The pipe isnt the deepest in this field but suspect 400mm deep maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

There arent any second hand ones nearby and I just need to get this job done so thinking it is quicker to buy new if I can get something around or lower than the above price range.

Have you tried dowsing ?

For some folks it appears to work well . I found my 4" cast iron to copper supply & stop buried four feet deep using dowsing with bent to 90degree plain gas welding rods .

stick the 90 degree bent bit inside a bic biro tube ,,,, the clear crystal one , and hold the tube not the rod . it works as a bearing and improves sensitivity ,, try it and see.

Got given a posh set two years a ago that had bulges of brass either side of brass tube handles .
Got Olha our very fit refugee lady to try and locate the new water piping I put in 6 yrs ago for the garden and garage .. it's not a simple run in a straight line . After half an hour she said " I get so many cross overs I don't know if it is me twisting my wrists or the water pipe. I reckon she hit the water pipe 60% of the time . She was amazed when I drew a map of where I put the pipes.

I'm going to say 400mm deep and cheap doesn't belong in the same statement, you need larger search coils for greater depth. Larger search coils tend to be more expensive

Sorry guys. Finding the pipe isn't an issue. I know where it starts and finishes in this field and can use my bent fence wire to find it anyway.

The pipes MDPE. I need the detector because I need to find a metal buried PRV on about 500ft of pipe so rather than dig the whole pipe up I'd rather dig where there is a ping along the line.

I was worried you'd say that. It may end up simpler to just trench a whole new length in at this rate!

There are quite a few metal detector clubs. It may be worth checking to see if there is one local to you and see if someone would be willing to assist you in finding it for some beer tokens

Chap over the road has one. I've asked him for favours before and just wary of keeping asking people, but I will give him a shout I think.

no but me mate has and a transmitter collar put it in a drainpipe a rabbit went in to in a field and it never came out tracked it for 50 yards and had to dig it out and smash the pipe he pulled the rabbit out like paul daniels out of a hat and out popped the ferret

I have got a Fisher detector you could borrow if nearer. 400mm would be just about the limit as long as the target is quite large.

Any idea what the valve is made of ? If its ferrous you are going to have a real problem with false signals. Reading what the detector is telling you is not always easy.
