Can anyone recommend a retailer of power file belts that last more than 30 seconds?

I buy belts for a 4” ish wide belt sander and split them down. They have a thicker/stronger backing fabric, and seem to last ages.
Just need to remember to draw the rotation direction arrow before I split it down.

Not sure what size the Evolution belts are but 3M cubitron belts are the best, long lasting and run smooth too but also pricey. Probably works out good value with the time they last and time saved fitting new belts. Milwaukee ones are good too, again smooth running but not lasting as long as 3M and not too expensive.
I’ve tried Norton belts as recommended but they’ve all snapped, bought from eBay so maybe fakes even though branded on the back.

I have seen someone online do this before with a lathe, but sadly I don't own one. How are you splitting them down?
That's fatal. You now need to buy a lathe!

Blunts pretty quickly. I use a wood blade in the grinder in a jig.

You could use a snap-off type blade screwed to a piece of wood. Put a width stop on the side of the wood. Arrange the blade only to project the thickness of the backing. Snap off a section when blunt.

What I found is you need to buy the belts where the join is tape reinforced on the back.
The rubbish ones are a sanded taper and glued...these seem to break easily.
The problem is...I've bought from the same supplier and sometimes you'll get the proper belts and other times it's the rubbish ones!

Southdown Abrasives in Lancing are pretty good for anything abrasive.
I needed some 36x4 inch belts for my old RJH Bandfacer. They supplied Zirconia belts which are excellent!
3M Cubitron are an excellent belt, but as said they're somewhat pricey. Southdown do an equivalent material. So I bought some 10x330 mm belts for my small power file & they're very good.
The only snag is that they have minimum quantities for everything, but 60 of the 10x330mm belts worked out at a shade over 90 pence each including the dreaded VAT, so not too bad.

Hmmm not sure how you'd do it in a lathe to be honest. Normally I just poke a Stanley knife through it to make a hole, and then tear it the rest of the way

I've found the Norton R822 zirconia ones from Pronet Abrasives (via ebay) are worth the extra - they're ~£1 each at 20 off of the 13x451 belts I use on by B&D sander.
They've got a taped joint and seem to keep their grit much better than their own-brand ones.

There is one supplier who has excellent reviews etc that are supplying fake belts. I have complained and been refunded several times. I suspect they are being taken for a ride by their suppliers.
The good blue belts are awesome and last ages.

I have had no trouble with these - but sometimes I forget and order from another supplier. You can tell the fake norton belts. They feel brittle and all the blue grit falls off before you even start using them!Same belt / supplier as me
