Im not a beginner mate this my 4th lathe , I'm not familiar with this one thats all .Crash proofing for beginners, the other way invites clouting the rotating jaws.
The compound went to get more clearance over the saddle.
You can use the existing lantern tool post for modern inset carbide, if you buy a cheap modern set that all uses the same insert (like CCGT which will be happy at the speeds safe for your machine) suiting the width of the slot once you set the tool height you can swap holders without height issues.
