Sump removal

I am trying to get the sump off my Transit campervan, it’s fitted without a gasket, sealant instead, as is modern practice. It’s rain stop play at the moment, but I’ve been gradually driving an old sharpened putty knife into the stuff with a hammer, but it will take forever. Is this how everyone does it, or is there a better or easier way? The damn stuff is like concrete.

There is a purpose made tool for the job although I’ve never used one. I did have a hacksaw blade from a powered saw that I broke into sections then sharpened the end and the edge that I then hammered in then along between the sump and the block , the proper tool is used the same way.. I just use a sharpened paint scraper - got one with a metal end for the job - weaken the sealant - then prise sump off with a pry bar.

Cleaning them up - I use a rotary soft wire brush on an air sander.

I started doing that with a sharpened putty knife, very slow going. The Haynes manual says don’t lever it off as you will damage the edge, I can’t get a screwdriver or anything else in there as it’s so tight, hopefully it will get easier as I release more. Bit of a sod led on my back, then came the rain…

I tend to - buy in sumps as well...

Most VW and Kia stuff sumps comes off OK - but we talking Transit here are we not...?

Price of vehicle goes up, ease and cost of maintenance is forgotten customer pays.
So meany needles gismoes, God I am glad we got out of the trade years ago, and that's before the poorly written software rears its head, the same as in the comms industry.
You talk to the Importers service departments, first you have to find someone who understands what you are trying to do then someone who cares a dam.

Just ordered a sump from eBay, with one on order, I can get brutal with it.

Good luck getting an aftermarket sump to seal reliably!
Been there, and everybody refused to fit aftermarket sumps, as they rarely lined up correctly, and would often be back few weeks later leaking again.

Also use good quality sealant. We always used Ford sealant, as it just worked. Its a Loctite product, but i never figured out exactly what it was.

Officially Ford state sumps (and timing covers) should not be reused.
But I have re-used them, you just need to be selective in where you lever them off, so the inevitable bends don't hamper resealing, but you're usually changing a transit sump because it's rusted through!

Genuine sumps weren't that expensive, although probably 2 or 3 times more expensive than whatever questionable quality is on Ebay.

Sump’s never used to rust through quite as badly as they do now!, perhaps it’s because old engines weren’t as oil tight as modern engines?

Sump now off, what a horrible job. Dropped it down, oil starts to drain out of the pump, at that moment a sudden gust of wind. Took the oil everywhere, hands, face, ended up using degreaser on my wristwatch, good job it’s waterproof!
