Winch motor brushes

Superwinch EPi 9.5. I’ve looked high and low for 4 replacement brushes for the motor (Superwinch have gone bust):

They are 20x9mm in section, maybe 22-25mm long when new. Copper graphite.

Custom-made ones would be about £120 all in, but given the commutator had to be skimmed due to burning, may not be worth that kind of punt.

I’m very surprised I can’t find a generic set for a starter motor or generator, or even larger ones I can cut down. Any ideas/brushes lying about?

Yes, the £120ish quote was from them and some others. As I say, the motor may not be worth that kind of punt.

The car starter/dynamo brushes I have are all a fair bit smaller unfortunately, I dont know whether truck starter brushes would be bigger

Cheers, emailed a few of those ^^. I did message that very last suggestion and they said they couldn’t help, but those brushes look like an option. Tried Safari AI search through their inventory but no go.

Maybe @fizzy could use his AI to search for me?

So, 28x9.5mm section needs taking down to 20x9mm. Could I do that nice and accurately on the mill? Maybe a piece of paper in the jaws for some grip, gentle cuts. Could experiment with the old brushes.

you could do that with a file, so a mill should make it easy.

Thanks. I might be able to get around the cable exit being in the wrong place.

One of the brush springs (sort of rectangular section) overheated too, so if any are available, it might be worth getting a new set. Or trying to re-temper the old one.

If you can fine a good auto electrical place they should have some to fit or cut down

re hardness/resistance etc , used to work in a rewind firm, and the way to test brushes for suitability was to use the edge of the original brush to draw a line on (accross the grain)softwood , a bit like a pencil , trying the replacements the same to match , to wide(dark) a line is too soft , too narrow they are too hard . obviously this is to match a set on unknown replacements . Many may need "shaving down" to fit , but if you get that mark right and bed them into the comm you will have no problem.
