its the loss of windows security updates that concerned me.

As Rannsachair says, its the security updates that is my concern too. I am using windows Defender, and it has been fine for years. For my part, I dont care about any upgrades, as the laptop is fine as it is, it is the firewall and virus protection that is the unknown. If they stop updates to Defender, what is the solution for someone who knows F all about electronics ?
they've chopped and changed about a dozen times now, they keep getting backlash and extending the date then trying to pull it back again... probably just to scare ppl into updating

Any time I've ever tried to slightly upgrade an old pc I've just ended up mostly building a new machine in the old box!

as goes for the firewall go somewhere else for it there is free ones out there just stay away from mcafee
other firewalls and anti virus protection has always been better off not being micro crap
one thing i will tell you dont run 2 firewalls or anti viruses together they cancel each other out so one must be shut down and windows 10 isnt being updated and your new one is shut down windows firewall and anti virus
as goes for not being sure create a backup ( iso ) using whats available though i use acronis you7 get many of them via a live disc pe like hirens boot cd /dvd
theres windows 10-11 live dvds out there to help you out
always create firefox or opera backups and transfer to another hard drive disconect hard drives that are important and transfer using a smaller hard drive but you need another pc but seen as your buying new keep the old in use but in offline mode
office 2014-2016-2018 still works in offline mode easy enough to transfer to new pc update the file to the new 365 and send that to where it needs to go and so does many a program that is on older pcs not able to upgrade them
if you dont trust your pc/laptop or notebook dont use it for payments or sign ins

Thanks for all the advice folks, I have decided on a slight upgrade that will hopefully just be plug and play: (I was easily swayed by @Jackimus to go down the upgrade route, the motherboard info from @gaz1 was really useful and if I was being very sensible I should probably just have hacked WIN 11 into the existing system as advised by @skotl )
ordered a Ryzen 7 5800X, Thermalite Peerless Assassin cooler, thermal paste and 32GB of Kingston DDR 36000MHz memory for a fraction of the cost of a new PC.
The CPU was less than half the cost of the 3D version (which is in short supply), I decided I could not justify the extra as I am a pensioner from next month

I'm really interested in Sapphire's new AIO, I'll have to wait for reviews, but they wouldn't make junk. It would match my 7900xtx of theirs! I got an insane deal on a 'refurbished' unit (that had just been opened and returned but was perfect), otherwise I'd never dream of having one.
I'm a big 'fan' (har har!) of air cooling, but physics are physics. If/when I feel the need to upgrade, it's either gonna be the new 140mm cooler from Noctua, or more likely AIO.

Well done, I wasn't expecting you would save that much!
And what you'll find is, your 5800x actually edges out the 3D for everything else that isn't gaming.

I could not find a new 3D for under £300, £124 for the 5800X, I see AM5 taking over. This upgrade will save me doing the same in the next couple of years I hope.
Thanks again for the advice, I see you have an enthusiasm around this like I did many years ago: I recall bringing home from the US a motherboard with a 486DX33 CPU, Maths co-processor and and 8MB of RAM to upgrade my original 386! When parts were way cheaper in the US and the exchange rate was around $2 to the £.

The Windows Update readiness checker just checks to see if it can do a windows update to get you to Windows 11.
You can download the Windows 11 files from Microsoft along with a tool to create a bootable USB drive.
Boot from this and install Win11
I have done quite a few laptops using this method and we have approx 2500 machines in work to do in work using the same method

Windows 10 free updates for another year in Europe (and UK)
1. Hang in there, MS might just soften their stance before Christmas.
2. Decent AV is a cheaper option for now against nasties if you keep Win 10, not sure if necessary to buy it tho' a freebie should do but it won't update/install other security releases.
3, You might get away with a Processor upgrade only depending on type of MB.
4. Same as 3.
5. Why? you have a perfectly good PC, you might have to upgrade some of the hardware if you want Win 11 but your PC Case, Ram, Gaming Card, HDs should have no issue with compatibility and replacing only what you have to will cheaper then buying a new PC.
6. Most of the bypass methods don't work, there are some exceptions however.
If you use to build your own PCs, you'll be fine, yes the tech'/hardware has moved on a tad, you will have to take some advise on the Win 10/11 forums but trust me, once you've settled on any new hardware, ordered, received, there in front of you, your ability starts to flow again.

The thing about the OP's question is that it depends greatly on how much you value your time, and how much of it do you want to spend it "messing about with computers"?. I value my time very highly and I hate spending it on PC's, so for a a bit over £300, I went out and bought a used PC, running W11, with 22 hours of use on the SSD and fully equipped with the TPM. Think it was a good move.
