Last first aid course as a senior NCO I did in the army back in 1979 , ready for things over the water. The staff sergeant medic called out , " Right , middle aged man falls into the road and is hit by a car what will you do? " ... Private Taff called out " Is it family Staff " and got 7 days in the clink for his comment ,
Though all of us now on nervous pre ops tour fell about laughing as none of us had heard such a black humoured wise crack as good as that before.

Well done @Dapph2 , I have been lying at the roadside with no help after being knocked off my bike, the police arrived first and asked me if I was on the bike. I am in full leathers, right knee broken with leg twisted out socket, dislocated thumbs and broken ribs They did nothing bar take statements and direct traffic until the ambulance arrived

Yes, I have all of those and more, the snag is if I jump in to save anyone nowadays I am going to need rescuing myself (This from a guy who regularly did 300'+ bounce dives!)
Reminds me of the time I jumped on the M62 at junction 22 heading east, accelerating enthusiastically in "hooligan car", I spotted a small Toyota on the hard shoulder with a young girl obviously in distress. So I pulled over in a howl of brakes and plenty of drama and reversed up the hard shoulder until I was about thirty or forty feet in front of her. My pal and I decided that as it was late dark and cold I should go back alone to find out what was wrong. Puncture and a spare that was flat. I took the spare but before I did I gave her my phone and told her to call her parents and tell them she was going to be late, where she was and what was going on, she was travelling home from Uni. (her phone battery was flat). I then set off with the spare to the garage near the Halifax turnoff. I inflated the tyre and bought a couple of those emergency foam and inflate cans. Went back, swapped the tyres then followed her all the way home to Weatherby.

I would only hope if one of my girls was stuck someone would do the same. No, nobody took any pictures, not that I was aware of anyway. Thankfully.

My ex got run down on a zebra crossing, hit and run. Someone called police and ambulance and someone else was giving first aid, as usual there was a crowd of gawkers but one individual decided that it would be a good opportunity to steal her handbag. Luckily there were no broken bones just sprains and bruising, the thief was never caught so we had to change all the locks at home and all of her bank stuff and her access passwords for work, she was more brassed off about that than the accident.

When my wife was a young mum (prehistoric times) she & the neighbour went along to the mothers club who had a first aider in with Resusi Annie doll to give basic emergency training. When it came round to the neighbours turn, both her & her mate refused, said they couldn’t do it. Instructor said “what if it’s your child” he just got a shrug & a blank look. My wife was not impressed.

A chap I was at college with in the 70's got knocked off his bike, a few folks went to his assistance including some kind soul who helped himself to his rather expensive wristwatch

' Sadly. longer ambulance waits are the norm now. Not the crews fault. They just can't hand over quick enough at the hospitals.

Hopefully things are changing across Wales,

Our local ED has averaged 15min handovers from ambulances over the last few weeks, longest wait last week was 45mins.

Apparently Welsh Gov has decided to eventually try and get a grip on Ambulance waiting times, being cynical, its probably cos there are elections next year for the Senedd

Thank you for the help given Dapph, unfortunately it seems a Swansea thing not to give way to anyone waiting at a junction, even worse if you drove a van. An acquaintance who lived in London dreaded driving in Swansea thought the standard of driving was much worse than London.

I grew up around Swansea, passed my test back in 83, 2yrs later I moved to Portsmouth and the drivers there made Swansea look easy

Hopefully not, from what I've seen on various TV programmes even folks with no first aid training will put an unconscious person into the recovery position which if done, should maintain an airway.

It’s not my airway, it’s my lungs, they don’t work laying down. I have to use a breathing machine and full mask at night to pressurise them, in and out.

Do what my bike rider mate has done..he is a diabetic type1 and has this tatooed on his wrist before the paramedics or public start pumping drugs or even a cup of tea with loads of sugur.

Brilliant job. I agree though, people are getting worse and worse with their reactions.

Few years ago when I was on a SAR team, we were providing medic cover for a local marathon type walk. I’m driving the ambo (v8 110!) with a trained medic. We had just pulled up at the far end of our patch to have a bacon butty and the radio went. Bloke having a heart attack at one of the check points c.6 miles away, immediate response needed. I hit the blues and twos and drove…… briskly to the village. Marshals were great, holding walkers at junctions so we could proceed at pace.

Pulled up in the village to a large crowd, medic was out the door before I stopped rolling. I pulled across the road to give some shielding and fend off, with blues on. Lardy piece comes waddling out her house “ can you park somewhere else, the lights are bothering me through the window and you’re blocking the road”

No, no I can’t.

“Well you just can’t park wherever you want”

Oddly, those flashing blue lights kind of mean I can, in relation to the incident.

She carried on badgering me as I’m opening the rear door to get a scoop stretcher in and only finally waddled away once we had loaded the guy up and set off again

I never got any achievement badges for my uniform except for my 25year long service award. (I was a leader)
