Household appliances from generators - any dos/don'ts ?

Its not that simple if your house is single phase! But 5kva would keep you going if required, washing isn't high priority, heat, light and the internet obviously are

I won't be connecting the generator to the house leccy. I don't have an isolater switch and the main fuse is in a sealed box, so no way to isolate from the mains. I would be working with extension cords from the junction box at the generator to the floors I need electricity.

Phase imbalance is a potential problem. Also 5kva is only 4kw/phase so not much margin.
The other option is to reconfigure the alternator from 15kva 3ph to dedicated single phase (a one-third debate applies so your limit becomes 10kva, but no phase or imbalance issues).

How much phase imbalance is too much?
How do they do it at building sites, there are junction boxes all over with 3 phase in single phase out. If the workers plug in stuff randomly there's bound to be phase imbalance.
Regarding the reconfiguring of the alternator, I would have to study up a bit.
When I was younger I studied electronics and was taught the basics of 3 phase, single phase, electric motors, why, delta and all that but that was a long time ago and I forgot most of it.
