Rello oil burner

Any one with knowledge of these RIello burners ?
I have a problem could be just unlucky
Reliable burner removed for service (done yearly)
Was working ok.
Removed to find dead mouse x 2
Fitted new jet cleaned burner flame sensor spark gap etc, put it back only the fan runs, that cuts out in roughly 30 sec and re set button pops out
Will re set
So start sequence as I understand is 1 fan starts, 2 spark starts followed by fuel pump solenoid allowing fuel in and away we go.
So control unit faulty I think talk to favorite boiler man who lends me a control unit same part No. fit it no difference fan runs nothing else fires there is no external thermostat other on the timer and hot tank
The mice had eaten the insulation from about 2mm of mains in on control board RIP 2 mice Earth to live
The mains goes direct to board so maybe that was original problem but the new factory board does the same coil for pump shows about 107 ohms but no volts reaching it anyway.
Is there a check on the magic eye flame sensor.
Or am I missing something so simple as to be stupid

Repaired an RB2 for someone recently that had been flooded. That would initiate the flame then shut off. The issues with that was the photocell connection had broken and the control couldn’t see the flame so would shut down.
Is the photo cell a separate unit? If it is try it with it disconnected, if that’s failed it may think it can see a flame and not energise the fuel solenoid. With it disconnected it may fire but will shut down because it won’t see the flame. I have seen an issue with some satronic control units that a wire becomes desoldered from the heater on the bimetallic strip and all the burner does is run the fan continuously and doesn’t progress any further. But unlikely to be that with a new unit.

Photocells (eg satronic) can often go off every few years.. they have a hard life in the combustion chamber. You can check ohms when removed (check values covered and uncovered in ambient room lighting) but some can show changed values but still not work right. Most are cheap enough to be almost a service item....

When mine went it was the flame sensor, the boiler wasn't that old but it failed, I'm sure the reset button was popping out after it tried to fire. They are an easy fix.
I've been stashing spares for mine over the last couple of years and now have a contract box, pump and some other bits I can't remember so this has reminded me to have a look

Only the fan runs no spark no fuel
Tried new flame sensor but should have spark and fuel with it not plugged into control box no voltage appears on fuel solenoid, & no spark
Tried another new ÇB SAME

No spark, no fuel to me would indicate control box issues. Is the ignition transformer part of the control box or is it separate?

Be aware that they will not get past the purge cycle if the "eye" sees light.

So, if you're testing the unit out of the boiler, you need to hold your finger over the photo sensor, otherwise it will just carry on purging (its a safety thing to remove potentially flammable gas from the exchanger prior to ignition)

So, hold your finger over it, then, if / when it starts sparking, shine a torch at the sensor. This will stop it going to lock out whilst you bleed the air out of the job.

Ign TX in control box, mains feed direct into CB, no external temp stat so link fitted in box, the original box had no socket for external stat, controlled with stat on HW tank to timer box
So it has had 2 new boxes and original all produce the same problem no spark, no fuel, but fan runs
Run out of ideas. Rang mate who is boiler service engineer he dropped in and is confused as well, unless there is a batch of faulty CB about.
He has just gone off muttering about a tree and rope

One of my burners played up when the capacitor failed. Wouldn't light, went into lock out. They're not silly expensive so might be worth changing. I tried it because I had a spare.

Can you post a picture of the control box with connections?
Have you tried it with photo cell disconnected?

Might be worth a read. One of my biggest issues was with the metal "key" in the pump. That and I had to carefully emery each part of the pump gear:

Posted yesterday that I'd got the oil boiler going again by fitting a pump I found in the garage and I thought new. There was no pressure when I fitted a gauge. With the suspect pump off, turning the spindle and it felt "gritty".

Last night everything working.

Just came in today from a day's tree felling and and the bloody thing is locking out again.

Yes to Pcell and a new one.
I think it is CBs as only fan runs
No spark, No voltage to fuel valve solenoid, wire from box to valve ok, valve coil shows 107ohms
The box should starts spark, opens fuel valve, and fan runs direct from incoming through box.

If you have tried a new control board and that did not change what it was doing (I think that's what you said in your initial post?) then I would say that rules out the control board (unless you manage to kill the donor one!)

Im not saying it isn't the control board at all.

Just, as I understand it, you swapped another one in already?

(My friends broke last winter - that was one of the new digital ones - and that was the control board!)


Is the suspicion that the donor control board was the wrong spec?
