read the description , it has anti crush in the dumb iron ends ,,, to me thats a chassis as per the description and front spring mount ,,, in america its the bit that comes over a front axle , but im not in america and theres not a lot in front of the front x member to even be a dumb iron at that , lots more on a 90 thoughDisagree.... I am happy gas welding, but it's much, much slower... It is however very adaptable, allowing you TIG like control and finesse, situations where you have stick-welding conditions.Pretty much 98 % of all welding I've done on Land Rovers ( which is quite a lot) has been done with Oxy Acetylene, I've found it the most flexible method that you can finely control and 'finesse' it when needed. Obviously if you're most comfortable with MIG whatever works best for you.
I'd prob err on the side of not using a specialist steel that's a bit of an unkown quantity, but
Duly noted, my needle gun is a bit on the aggressive side (like permanently deform 2mm steel if you dwell too long aggressive) so I might need to turn the air pressure down a tad, or google the manual to find out how to adjust the spring setting.
Interesting looking at your front setup, it's significantly different to mine, yours has the radiator mounts from a Defender, and a completely different cross-member much further forward.
Or is that from the engine swapping shenanigans?

It's not high carbon or anything like that.
Corten A606 sheet is roughly equivalent to S550J structural steel, whilst most mild steel used in cars has properties more like S275.
Unfortunately there's nothing really available about whether the higher yield strength of Corten also translates into greater stiffness, which would make the original chassis liable to tear just past the weld.

The latter I highly suspect. I put the rad mounts on to suit a a Defender V8 rad which I had in stock and is readily available. I'm also running a 4.6 as well which I think has very slightly different water outlets compared to a 3.5.

It says in the very definition that the front springs are attached to it. Therefore it takes the weight of the vehicle (well a chunk of it or possibly all of it depending on weight distribution and position of the vehicle etc).
The bumper is held on by a bit of the chassis that protrudes beyond where the dumb irons are welded on. Regardless of the etimology or accuracy in all Land Rover parts the dumb iron repair sections usually are about a foot of the chassis from where the bumper attaches back. In a coil sprung vehicle this carries minimal weight, in a Series the spring is attached to it therefore it does.
The term dumb irons has come to be accepted as a general term for the repair sections as advertised, though I doubt Land Rover themselves ever officially referred to any part as 'dumb iron' it's just probably a 'slang' type thing that's repeated through usage.
I have to say we always referred to that part as a dumb iron rightly or wrongly, it's just language after all
