Corten for Chassis Repairs?

Just thinking about the repairs needed on the front dumb-irons of the Landy...

I was going to order some zintec of the correct thickness to remake the damaged sections, but I already have loads of 2mm and 3mm corten that was intended for a different project.

In principle corten has similar properties to mild steel...

But are they similar enough to avoid me just creating a new stress-cracking problem down the road?

No idea about Corten but, You can get quite decent dumb iron complete unit/sections which can be way easier than patch and mend. in fact the last one I did was a pair inc front X member all in one, simple weld all way round on both sides ( provided you line everything up of course)

The corrosion extends just slight too far back to use a standard repair section on its own.

I am weighing up the complications of fabricating it myself vs repairing just enough to let me use a pre-made repair section.

If I do it myself I won't be patching, but cutting out the full profile of the rotten section, seam welding to good metal, with a staggered join, then open corner welding to remake the box-section.

It's more labour intensive, but I know that letting in little patches will only move the issue around.

Point taken, sounds like if I were doing it I'd use the available pre made parts and do a nice job on the 'flat' bits in-between ! Obviously with the thing in front of you, only you can make the call.

I've always used just plain mild steel, it'll last over several years if you cut it back/out correctly. Landys are easy chassis to repair.

It can't be worse than the Hilux fuel tank cross member, but it's definitely going to be an awkward job.

Yeah I think TBH it will be a case of working out which method will be easier in terms of maintaining the alignment of the suspension mounts.

I put a quote on one last week ,,, it needed a patch on the drivers footwell too , so its wings off to start with .... and a William .

This is exactly why I am doing my own work...

All being well I will have the new drivers footwell and a-post in today, then on to the chassis.

I wouldn't dream of paying someone else to have anything done on a Land Rover tbh

not many folk will take the wings off a twenty year old hunk of junk and then weld rust to broken dreams ,,, over a weekend and before work on monday ,,, many of us here take for granted the ability to cut and weld metal , lots of folk cant do that ... and then they have to pay someone to fix it .
