Cracked soil pipe seal

You see its got a crack in the outer ring?


I forget quite how these work, but i think the outer ring keeps the sealing "rubber" thing under compression, right?

This has been like this for years, and is not leaking, however, i want to remove all the stuff above it, and i fear that will take tension off the ring and cause it to leak.


Both pipes either side of the fitting will not move, but the fitting itself is one of these -

I dont know if you can remove the middle section on them without moving the pipes themselves?


Either way, its going to be no fun.


Or can i just pour some sort of resin stuff all over it, and not think about it further?



Again, its not leaking now, but i just fear that messing about with the stuff above it is going to make it leak.

What age is the property roughly? Is that PVC pipework or could it be clay, hard to tell in the photos

Its modern plastic stuff, maybe 10 years or so.

If its out of sight, I would be inclined to clear all the soil or whatever around it for about three inches, shutter it up, and encase it in a strong sand & cement mix. 3 to 1. Maybe put some SBR or something in the mix.

If you aren't adding any new connections to that location id be tempted to leave it alone and seal it in situ as is. Replacing the fitting would be ideal but with pipes buried in there it could cause more harm than good in the process

Thats the trouble though.. perhaps smear it with a decent sealant of your choice and then lob a load of concrete over it then

Can you excavate right round it and put an endless jubilee on it?

Normally youd use 2 rubber sleeve connectors and get the type that don't have a lip inside in the middle of the sleeve. Break out the concrete around the pipe and get rid of the cracked collar, cut out the straight section with a saw, slide on rubber sleeves on each end of the section removed, put it back into place and slide the rubbers across the joint and secure.

Quite how you'd achieve this on that awful corner I don't know.

I suspect it will dismantle. Screwfix sell them, buy one, try it and take it back if it doesn't do what you want.

As for dismantling -

The part is one of these -

The mid section comes out. The two larger rings screw it together. Its for odd angles.

You only need about 3mm of movement on the mid section to remove it. If there isnt enough play when the two locking rings are unscrewed, i could saw out the mid section, remove it, then remove the cracked end. I could, if i really had to, then remove the required 2 of 3mm off the end of the pipe, reassemble, and use the 3mm slack to give me the play on the middle section.


Basically, i think people are looking at it a bit wrong - you dont need the 50 mm or whatever a normal fitting needs - you only need the 2/3mm on the screwed section.

I have one knocking about here - ill take it apart and take a photo.

If you are worried about the split expanding you could always use one of those Amazon specials plastic staplers/welders to "repair" it prior to additional excavation

Agreed, with the added comment that before starting to clear around it I'd score the pipe either side so you know exactly where that cracked ring sits. It may well spring off and the crack open up once it's free. Get the hoover in and around in case any grit has worked under the ring whilst exposing it.

Then clean the joint and solvent cement the crack before applying the bfo jubilee clip.

Sometimes the rubber seals dry out. They're great whilst in place but once disturbed can leak. You could work in a smear of say silicone grease onto the seals then jubilee clip it. Likely though to interfere with any solvent weld.
