The Denbigh Drill

Just got given one of these Denbigh drills, about 5mm of caked on grease and oil all over the whole thing. A full restoration is planned for it.

I currently have very little understanding of gearboxes and associated gears. I’m just a dumb boilermaker

I’m curious if you took any finished pictures I can use for a complete reference.

Is painting the inside of the gear boxes necessary or just done for peace of mind?

The drill got sold five years ago. Every gearbox on a machine I’ve used had painted gearboxes, so I did that. They’re not meant to be greased. The paint helps you spot things like a pin fallen out for example, but you do you.

Just put it back together how it came apart is all I can say, that’s how I do it!

Sounds like a bloody plan mate. The only real issue I know mine has, is the top gear box will make a horrible clunk if I try and move the lever, and the chain that runs down the front/body of the drill seems to be missing a roller and is carving a channel through the body.

Should be a good experience to learn about machines.
I’ve also got a 9” hercus lathe to restore and an “no brand” wagon wheel roller
