Bios version appears to be the most current, I have the same version that the MSI website offers for download

it seems to me that it is more and more likely it is a config issue as i have now just noticed that my action camera cant be used as webcam now either...i no longer have the action cam listed in the drop down menu when selecting which camera to use even though the camera is plugged in and powered on through USB (no battery fitted) so its taking power, but not being recognised as a device

Can you go into disk manager and check what's happening there when you plug them in ?

disk manager shows nothing with the readers plugged in, but does show me when SSD is plugged in...

device manager also show me nothing under disk drives, has nothing for memory tech at all and USB drivers all claim to be up to date and working properly. i have even gone as far as uninstalling the main USB drivers to force them to reinstall after a reboot, but no change occured.

yes both SSD's are definitely USB3...
so, usb controller has failed then...whats the remedy?
ive seen EHCI somewhere while ive been rummaging through any setting i can get my hands on, shall go back and see what it was in reference to

I see you have tried kali Linux is this through a live boot disk rather than a virtual machine such as VirtualBox? If so my guess is a hardware failure, if it is VirtualBox then it is possible it is a driver issue, however I’d be leaning towards hardware failure. One option might be to get a plug in USB 3 hub, but I don’t know how the pass through of USB 2 devices work, it may be still reliant on the underlying usb2 controller.
If your device has USB C I’d be tempted to try something like this for £10, they are handy regardless, doesn’t have to be this one, just one I found.
A few quid more you get one with built in SD card reader.

I run kali through Oracle VM.
I have a UBC C port and an adapter for it somewhere but the adapter i ordered yesterday is USB 3 so hopefully that works.
Annoying though given how relatively new the laptop is...
Another thing that's irritating me is that one of my wired controllers is USB 2 and that appears to still work fine

i had something similiar to you but had it from a usb 3 stick
it would recognise the brand new stick try to install driver then throw an error
in your case its not recognising it, or saying it exists and that can be a few things software drivers, hardware ( usb socket fault ) or the usb card reader itself or even the card itself
card reader gets slotted in another machine to test then its test the main ones
but ive done more ive ripped out the driver and then done a reboot to watch what it does
if im testing hardware i use a live usb or cd windows safe boot hates it and that allows me to test hardware to see if its working
virtual boot inside windows dosnt allow you to test your hardware as its using the same drivers as windows 10/11
but windows 7 or 8 on the same laptop does via the live usb or cd

Yes, wireless dongle for Xbox controller, USB hub, wired and wireless mouses and a wired keyboard and both my 500gb SSD's all work on both USB ports and the USB C port works fine too...

the try the usb card reader in another device and same with the sd cards
just to rule each one out
sd cards are known to go faulty far quicker than a usb stick but even usb memory sticks do go faulty as well

Sd cards have been tested in cameras, all work fine, they are recognised, save and play back files as expected
Plus, again I have 3 card readers and none work so the chances of it being a reader are slim.

thats what you think but i have 3 slot in card readers that have failed
but i have a usb sata dock unit so use that instead as it has many card readers with that type

Ok, so if all 3 card readers have all failed at exactly the same time, why can't I then use my action cam as a reader? And why isn't my action cam recognised as a plug in camera anymore?
