You said it! Two nights ago I disappeared down the coffee connoisseur/**nker rabbit hole ... see you in a few years when I've started to plumb the depths.I'm a V60 filter coffee person rather than espresso but consistency is the key to both. To this end I got a set of electronic scales which lets you weigh the grinds. This way you can add or subtract a gram which can make a huge difference. And that's why a decent burr grinder is improtant. mine is a £100 wilfa which is good enough for me! A YouToober called James Hoffman (owns Square Mile coffee too) has a very good series on espresso & gives start points for a good brew. He can get VERY nerdy indeed but does at least acknowledge that he's getting to nerdy. But his starter videos are very useful if you're looking to get into it.

Well I went Gaggia classic too, picked up a v old one spares or repairs. Fingers crossed it's just lots of cleaning & new seals. It really is a rabbit hole!
Hoffman and plenty of other you tubers go into great depth.
I do think it matters more if you drink eapresso /machiato or flat white. Anything else, i think you can get away with a less fancy set up (just my opinion!)
Home set ups do fine until you compare to some of the high end coffee shops and then you taste whats possible!
The temp control on the gaggia classic is pretty poor, at least 10 degrees temp variability, pid control gives much better consistency, addition of this to my machine is still in progress![]()

Where did you source the PID kit? & What's the best cleaner for aluminium? The boiler came apart& it's nasty, I've tried citric acid but daren't leave it too long.View attachment 491500
I used a vinegar solution (50% i think) to descale but it was fairly light. Think you can soak in vinegar no problem.Well I went Gaggia classic too, picked up a v old one spares or repairs. Fingers crossed it's just lots of cleaning & new seals.

That's per week! Think your right

Looks like a nice set up, I'm thinking we should start a thread of coffee roasters & recommendations. Which are the ones you use?Ok only just seen this thread, other half calls me a Coffee snob.
Yes this set up cost more than my last car, but has lasted just under 10 years (October 2015) and pulled about 8000+ shots according to the counter on the grinder.
Espresso machine is a Quickmill Verona, Grinder is Eureka Zenith, but the older model.
Buy my coffee from 3 different coffee roasters.
And its a brave/foolish person that gets between me and my morning coffee
