Which shed

I'm looking at replacing my shed this year which will just be used for storage of tools, materials, stationary engines etc. and am looking at a couple of options.

10' x 6' wood from a local place, includes rubber roof instead of felt and composite bearers to keep wood bearers off floor, includes delivery & erection for @£1800

Pros: plenty of options to screw shelves, brackets etc. to the walls, looks better than plastic.
Cons: will need wood treatment every year to maintain 10 year guarantee.


Or 9' x 7' plastic shed delivered flat packed for @£1500

Pros: maintenance free, limited lifetime warranty
Cons: slightly smaller, self assembly, no means to fix shelves etc. inside

So what does the collective think? or any other suggestions.

I know plastic is technically maintenance free, but wood every time, for me.

No sweating/condensation, & as you say, there are fixing options for shelving etc.

c if u can get it delivered a week or so early, then u can treat ALL sides of the wood a couple times.....
that'll slow the rot down..

I'd be all for the maintenance free plastic option.
There's got to be a way to attach battens onto which you could screw shelves.

I would be thinking UV degradation of the plastic and what its' lifespan would be? Some will lose colour and go brittle.

Wood, tanalised sheds I have had previously have dried out and left gaps, I find non tanalised better. A good base and treatment before erecting is what I have done.

There's no strength in plastic, and unless you have a perfectly "level" slab to erect it on, the plastic option can end up wonky, with the door not closing properly.

I've the same problem apart from it's steel or wood, but I'm leaning towards wood as well........

that'll slow the rot down..

The parts are all dipped before assembly and they specificaly state not to put any treatment on for at least 6 months.

This was what I had to get into my head. Mine cost about £3k for a bespoke 18' x 6' erected. I have a thread about it here somewhere!
Everyone pretty much said the same as you are getting.

I bought a 10x6 wood one late last year which cost me just over £1000
Arrived flat packed and I assembled it myself.

Assembly was much harder than building one from scratch as you are having to handle large, heavy panels.
I upgraded the roof felt to rubber as I was not happy with the quantity they supplied and they would not move "we've never had any problems"

Design and construction for the most part were okay, but there are inevitably some corners cut and areas I'm not happy with.

Oh and don't let anyone tell you wood sheds don't suffer from condensation. Mine was dripping over the winter. Have had to add insulation and ventilation/extraction.
Maybe it was down to our freaky weather and the treated timber drying out, or my addition of rubber roof??

If I were to do it again I would build one from scratch, but I understand that's not an option for you.

In your position I would go with the wood option, built for you. Just be prepared for it to annoy you in some respects.

We’ve got a Keter plastic shed thats been up for a few years now and is lightly used for garden storage. Overall it’s decent, and I like it, however as Arc Tourist states above, the door has sagged slightly (need to shut both together) and it really needs a consistent base as I doubt it would be able to span any distances like bearers would.

My concern would be the floor which is interlocking (honeycomb webbed? [around 45mm from memory]) plastic panels that would probably need a layer of sacrificial ply to support stationary engines or even shelving units given the weight?

20x16' and 8' walls with a box profile roof and 19mm ply lined internals and douglas fir waney edge cladding was circa £3k. As others have said a self build if you can will result in a far better shed.

If you're not able to do the physical bits can you find a helper to teach if you have the skills? Or perhaps a local carpenter can slap it up for some cash in hand?

I designed that on CAD because I know how to and it was all designed to minimise wastage (I.e. Multiples of 600mm / 4.8m). With that I was able to have a cut list and the neighbour popped around to help out, we'd got the stud walls cut and slapped up in a morning. All told I think it took me 4 days on my own after that.

If you've got a local sawmill I wouldn't discount approaching them. My local one in the village quoted £17.50 / sqm for the 3/4" Douglas fir cladding. At the time that was only 50p/sqm more expensive than the cheapest ****tiest cladding from a builders merchant. I could also use a nail gun to put it up whereas the M18 would have blown through the featheredge stuff. Went up a lot faster also covering 8"x3m at a time.

Since then I got conned into putting one up for my sister (4.8x3m or so) and knocked that out in a weekend. Build the walls flat on the floor, tip them up and bolt / nail together.

A decent nail gun makes things a lot easier as well!

Blimey, 2 grand for a shed ? I built mine from all free rescued materials, mainly 4x2 and ply somewhat 'over engineered'. I think all i bought was a roll of roofing felt
