Oak door, plonker, help.

I've been a bit of a plonker and knackered a brand new oak veneer door
Here's a photo.

I slipped with the screwdriver putting on the handle and nicked the door slightly, it wasn't too bad and I only swore mildly...
BUT I then thought I'd sand it out and proceeded to sand straight through the very very thin veneer!
I've tried to take a picture of the veneer but it's almost impossible to even see it on the edge of an off cut.

It must be about 0.3 mm thick.

I've seen lots of products for repairing this sort of thing but wondered if anyone here has done it before and what was used.

I'll be varnishing after the repair so I don't think I can use the wax type products.

Can you slice the veneer off of that offcut and then inlay it into the damaged bit on the door?

going to be how picky your going to be with a repair

filler repair will stick out like a sore thumb if you can live with it

cut out the viner and glue in a match bit with luck from your own door on an edge etc will be a near match but will have a slight defect depending on the quality of repair

want a a unseeable repair replace the door


im not trying to be harsh just get you to think on what your expecting of a repair

Thanks guys but that bloody door was one of the worst to fit as the frame isn't straight in any way so I had to cut it top and bottom and plane the sides.
It's a last resort to replace it.

The sil repairs that sort of thing . Basically epoxy resin and paint . And good eyes with a steady hand !

Ive never done it, but could you re-veneer the whole section?

Veneer isnt expensive (ali express sells it etc) so its just a case of its application.

Newyorkshire wood shop (or whatever the name is) has a video of him using an iron on it.

I did that with what looks like the same door (Wickes?) when I realised I'd cut the hinge rebate in the wrong place. The repair ended up being pretty much invisible.

if you have the offcuts make sawdust out of them and thin glue them back onto the door with light sandings

I have fannied around using coloured pencils to hide sections of filler in expensive sets of shelves and got away with it.
I always use water based pencils stolen from a family member
these look just the ticket never seen skin tone pencils before but lots of colour range

Just do a bunch more damage all over the door, it’ll look like it’s meant to be there. Patina, I think it’s called……

Get one of your off cuts get a piece of slightly damp cloth and an hot iron , cloth on off cut and iron it and see if the veneer will lift . It may it may not depends what it's glued with if does youv'e got a repair piece . Now hopefully if you do get some off cut the best bit that matches the door but don't cut it square cut it with zig zag / jagged edges ( the eye is drawn to straight lines in a veneer .Lay your repair piece on the door and carefully cut around the patch with a scalpel ( like a surgeon circumsizing a knat ) overlaying with masking tape is sometimes easier , then youv'e got to pick out the old and glue in the new . Give it a try or it's another door .

This then varnish door, itll be forgotten in a few weeks

What sort of varnish/finish are you intending on using?

There is a good chance by the time you have a finish on there it won't look *that* noticeable.
You will always see it of course, but that goes for any repair you do.

It's Ronseal varnish, Diamond hard satin finish.
