And the recent 08S update- the saw has a couple of broken castings on it -





I will be able to magnesium TIG weld these areas up and fully repair them it'll just add a couple hours of work no big deal really.

It's interesting that all the parts, including even the recoil cover is all magnesium cast. And the great thing is, besides the damage above there isn't a single fin missing from the recoil which is important and also something I couldn't have TIG welded back



Next job on this 08S is to remove and rebuild the recoil with new rope etc and get the saw able to turn over to check for spark first.

Thw chain on it appears new and razor sharp but rusted and seized in place. I will remove that and soak it in evapo rust which will take care of that as too good a chain to throw away.

045 repairs will come first to get it running then I'll come back to this 08S and get it running too.

Slightly strange one on the 045 tonight. I stripped, US cleaned and rebuilt the carb. Cleaned out the fuel tank and filled it with fresh super UL mix.

It wouldn't sputter at all turning over. No signs of life. Taking the spark plug out it was wet with fuel. But pulling over to check for spark and I was getting what appears to be a decent blue spark.

So tomorrow night I'll clean and check the gap on the spark plug and try again to see if it will fire up. If not then I can only assume there is an intermittent spark and maybe the points need uncovered and cleaning.

I also noted the exhaust on the 045 has been welded up in the past. Not sure if this is a mod of some sort or because it rusted out but I'll likely look for another exhaust.

Has likely been gutted to gain more power aka a 'muffler mod' as our cousins in USA call it.

I got some more Stihl tinkering done today on the recent 08s and 045.

045- it still won't run. Wets the spark plug. 170psi compression so it's not that. I think it's ignition related but can't get the flywheel off without ordering a special tool for these. Tool ordered and a electronic ignition conversion chip so I'll convert the ignition system on it, removing the points and see will it fire up after that. Carb is 100% as I swapped carbs onto my other running 045 to test today also.

08s got a serious cleaning and the carb stripped down. I am waiting on the recoil spring and carb kit in post early next week then I'll try to get the 08s running



Re the broken top handle on the 08s, it is the same as a ts350 handle and I have good used spares here so that's a straight swap out to fix that. I do have a TIG magnesium repair to do tomorrow on the 08s handle to oil pump cover.

Am I right in thinking the 08s is basically a ts350 engine and just a different bar/drive system?

Update on the £15 08S

It's now running really nicely as of 10 minutes ago Cleaned, new spark plug, carb rebuild, new cord and recoil spring. Not bad at all - you just can't kill these old Stihl saws



Carb tune and full reassembly will be completed in the coming days. The completely seized but still sharp and unused chain from it was steeped in Evaporust and is rust free ready to go back on now. I am deciding how to clean the rust from the bar and still keep the original Stihl paint that's left.

Citric shouldnt damage the remaining paint or the bar, within reason - dont leave it soaking for a week. Hot strong solution and check every 5-10 minutes, wont take long.

Doing some willow pollards today and a 6" stem of
Griselinia, I got to try out my new full chisel 3/8" chain on the 2511. It cuts incredibly smooth, good fast cuts, it is a massive improvement over the other chains.
I cant wait to try the same, on the 20T.

I picked up another Stihl yesterday. A MS200 for £60 locally as it was a non runner



Or so the seller said but he likely didn't do much with it. He said last time it ran was near 10 years ago.

I drained the fuel tank, added fresh fuel and it started up fine! I ordered a service kit for it and will clean and give it some maintenance shortly.

Curious about the MS200 VS MS201 debate I guess now I'll be able to try a MS200 out to compare.

The flywheel removal tool and chip arrived and I got to removing the 045's flywheel



What I wasn't expecting was someone had already been there and added a 1 pole chip in the past




I think I'll try fitting my own new dual pole chip and remove the kill wire to see if it will run OK then.

If not then my best option is likely the same type of conversion kit I got from Germany for my 041 which is running superb on it

Joe knows he needs one for his collection Best of the Stihl 35cc top handles? Cant say I have used that many saws.

Would like to try other Echos but few people have them, everyone uses Stihl, they dont consider anything else.

2511 is a great saw, thanks for recommending it! Best purchase I have made.

I can weld the cracked casing and restore this one. Likely won't be this year though. I will fit a new pull cord on it sooner than later Just to see will it turn over and fire on spray.
