Advice please . renewing driving license @70.

I got sent a renewal form this week, it runs out in May.

I renewed last year - a really bad experience which took 4 months to complete. Their form came in January and I sent it straight back ....and waited!

I have a serious problem with one eye after an accident as a kid. It was declared when I applied for my probationary licence back around 1972. I've been driving with since that time with no problems

After about 10 weeks doing nothing, DVLA said the problem had not been declared back in the 1970's. I was surely going to have some problem proving that I had declared it, and DVLA said all their paper records for the 70's had been destroyed as they went digital. DVLA then moved on to whether or not the eye was a complete stopper in terms of licencing.
It was all sorted out after about 16 weeks of hassle with me keeping my licence, but the stress it caused

I can't answer that directly but the replacement at 70 is free. They ask that you send the old one back but we didn't and heard nothing. So it's likely that if you only have a paper one and have to renew at 70 you will get back a photo card one and then send nothing back.
Not an actual guarantee though.

What ever you do photocopy or take a picture of it too make sure you keep all your entitlement

I didn’t pay, sure it’s free. I didn’t send the old one back either. 76 in August, so have to go through it again

Thanks, I thought that was just for photo licences not for the old paper type, I still have mine.

Do you think someone at the DVLA checks returned licences against the database? I’ve never sent one back, if they asked I would say I’d put it through the shredder.

Need to renew my licence soon @70, can somebody clarify the tech spec Please . Although I used to drive lorries , up to 6.5 ton with 3.5 ton trailer I have no need these days , I want the capability though to drive up to 3500kg truck plus 3500kg trailer . So am I right in thinking a straight licence renewal is right ? and that I dont need C1/D1 any more . currently have A,B1,B,C1,D1,BE,C1E,D1E,fklnpq.
if I do a straight renewal will it still incude A,B1,B and BE. appreciate your replies.
So in effect I wont need a D2 application and full med certificate for renewal saving some pennies. I would also like to keep agricultural tractor on my license.

You were not allowed to drive 6.5t towing 3.5t on a non test C1E unless you claimed the rights in 97. With proof of you using it then.

If you no longer want C1 or D1 yes just renew it & you keep BE.

I think if you wish to keep the ability to tow 3.5Kg then you need the full medical unfortunately. Other people may be more upto date than me.

from what I have checked B1 allows 3500 towing , updated a fewyears back , hence why I am double checking. thanks

B1 is a totally different licence for smaller vehicles.

once lost my licence so sent for a new one . old type . a year later had to take it to cop shop as id been pulled . copper said licence isnt valid wheres the other . what other . the newer one . ohh sh.it the old one had turned up and i gave that one so they took it off me

I used to drive 7.5 tonnes and lower , no problems , anyways thats all history going forward it will be 3.5 plus trailer as and when, yes I did cpc ect. previously. cheers
