It's handy as he's a keen gardener and he runs a hose through the garage to the front drive to wash the cars.

We don't have water meters on domestic properties in NI. (I'm sure it's paid for another way granted but we can use as much water as we want)

its based on the the rate able value of your property to what they charge. so if you only use a small amount its best to have a meter fitted large amount dont get one

My rates are circa £2600 a year so they get paid well
I wish I didn't have a meter. My supply pipe is about a mile and a quarter AFTER the meter and we are responsible for it and it keeps springing leaks. It runs across someone else's garden, two different farmers farmland under a track and under a road. How the heck did anyone think that was a good idea...

When I lived on the Berkshire Downs our water supply came from a farm half a mile away. Just after we bought the house the farmer installed a meter and every quarter one of the tractor drivers would come and take a reading, followed by a handwritten bill. After the third bill the driver came for the reading but no bill so I queried it with him, ‘farmer says you don’t use much and he doesn’t need the money’ went nine years without another bill until the old boy died.

Not good. Probably all one owner when installed. That's the trouble when things get sold and carved up.

As mentioned above its more likely to be alkathine pipe than plastic. Plasson especially but also philmac have sleeves that fit in with the gripper ring to take it to the right size. Again as above cut a bit off and take it to an agricultural supplier they will be used to this kind of stuff. Jam a stick with a rag round it to stop the flow and give yourself a few hours breathing space to source the proper thing or bend the pipe over if you've enough extra.
Source a supplier first before cutting and I would always recommend plasson. Good luck.
Ps.the supply possibly a T from the house so legionaries could be a problem. Think I would try and source the feeds.

We had traces of it at work - it's not to much of a problem until it atomises . . . every morning they had a maintenance lad come and run the taps for a good while to flush it through . . . stood staring at his phone next to the sink the water was smashing down into . .
