Work to live NOT live to work.

In a similar vein my lass was a cracker of a dolly bird , but with brains , aged 24 when we married .
She rose up in jobs & pay grades to become PA to a financial director in commercial union .

She was on good money but the requests for a few hours extra to get something finished turned into ......can you be here at quarter to eight instead of nine so we can run through the tasks for the day ?

She complied ,then the MD demanded that the FD had a daily 07.15 hrs meeting . MD lived a few hundred yards away from the office , FD lived 11 miles and Alison lived 33 miles away.
No rise in compensation for her earlier & earlier attendance .

One day I said to her Sweetheart I love you to pieces , I married you to be with you so we can do what we want with our love together , me playing second fiddle to two managers who are on four or seven times more that what you are on is not helping us. This daily 66 mile round trip is you taking an big pay cut and also means your BX19 GTI car running costs are a lot higher . How are we going to work through this ?"

The next day Al said " I was so involved in the thrill of high finance and my work responsibilities I hadn't realised what had happened .

A week later she had handed in her notice , 21 days on full holiday pay later , we had a fabulous three week summer holiday in the South of France with my son & daughter & on our return was told she'd got a job 1/2 a mile away from home on almost the same salary .. so in effect she got a decent pay rise for not having to travel, usually walked with several other employees who live close to our home . Come bad weather they car shared with great success as overtime was frowned on by the hierarchy .

It would be interesting to know the reasons for that way of life .

Spend thrift wife ( my first marriage ) addiction to gambling or alcohol or smoking , kids they cannot afford.

Often it's the sheer stupidity in having & using credit cards they will never be free of on minimum re-payments ( costs app 33% more than your borrow )

Best book I've come across is " Swimming with the Piranha makes you hungry " , get it , read it and put it in to practice, it will see you debt free in about seven years . Once you are debt free life takes on a fantastic new slant and it's not too hard to do either.

Agreed on being debt free is fantastic . Except for a £6000,oo mortgage in'75 I can honestly say I have never been in debt. Broke yes, but never owed anyone . I just cannot understand what it must be like to owe. I got fed up with a P**t one day boasting of his wealth ,all of which was debt, ( million£ house and flash cars etc) I shut him up by telling him I was wealthier than he would ever be and put a fiver on the table and said" cover it without borrowing".

You can still use that seven year to becoming debt free idea to kill the mortgage too . Annually or monthly reducing the mortgage on a regular basis knocks thousands & thousands off your normal long term cost where you'd just keep paying the required rate.

IIRC , we managed to zap our mortgage 12 yrs early and got £ 780 pcm tax free pay rise as a result. as well as saving something like £14 ,000 in repayment interest .

I was paying off £200 a month on top of my mortgage for years until those cxxts Truss and Quartang shafted the country.
It now just covers the extra interest rate.

I need to grow some gonads and go in and see what they say and do, if anything. They are always pushing for more work, faster etc etc but no thanks.

What set this off more for me is what happened last October. Ok we get holiday / sick days etc etc. and bereavement days.
It was 3 days before me and my wife were going on holiday, my son in law was diagnosed with a brain tumour after he collapsed, It was at the end of October last year. Well whole family was distraught. My wife was in such a state, and still trying to cope now, as he passed away 7 weeks later. And that situation has shown how my work place is. Beside using the holidays to stay off work, I had only had 3 off days sick in two occasions. And as i had used all my holidays i said ill use my sick days that i have left, which they didnt like so i called it stress, which it was.. As it was my third time of by then in my sick days, i lost two days pay before i got paid for the remainder of 7 days
That month i lost £450 as they didnt pay me for a couple days of sick, and lost the bonus as i had time off, the remainder of the `sick days` and i had to have time off obviously. As the lad was not my blood relative they said they cant do anything. so i had to go to work once days had ran out and be on the phone as hospital wanted us there for updates and meeting etc. The lad was given a few months maybe to live. And work would not cover me for what time i needed left to be with my wife and Lee. Even had to clock out when i had to go quick.
I really dont know why i am still there if that how they treat staff, i am never late, rare as hell that i am ill and never undue time off.

Frankly speaking, any person/company that would treat someone like that is lower than a snake’s belly in a mud rut. The sort of character that you wouldn’t take a slash on if they were on fire.

I won’t presume to tell you what to do, just that if it were me, I would quietly find something else to pay the bills and just as quietly clear out my stuff and walk out without a word.

Rarely am I astonished by workplace matters these days but this one had me shaking my head at the IPAD.

I went and spoke to the boss the other day, I spoke about a pay rise to come to level with what i do. So he said, he agrees, he didnt realise what i did as the foreman keeps the shop floor business separate from the office or something along them lines. He is going to put it to head office and see what eh can do. So wile i am looking else where ill see what i can get out of them. Apparently i cant be on welders rate, as i am not a welder, dont see what that matters. and next step is management rates.
The boss is retiring soon and it seems the foreman is becoming more a little T**T. he must know something we dont.

Not so much a con as not giving you the full info...teasing people into an interview with a high rate then they tell you afterwards that you are effectively self employed, or you have to take a lower rate to be 'on the books' very much like an agency but without the middle man...a friend works for them in a warehouse as self employed and he earns good money but he is very energetic and doesn't stop all day, they do have a bit of a reputation for being a nightmare to work for if you can't keep up with demands

This is the truth. Order picking is the most miserable existence and you'll be in the company of people whose only ambitions are make it to the weekend and drag down anyone who dares to put a cheery face on. The living dead I call them. It suits some people, it certainly didn't suit me even at 19 yars old.

I lasted only a couple of months. It was only ever going to be a stop-gap job but I got out of there pretty damn quick as I could feel my IQ diminishing by the day.

I did order picking for a plastic window fitting supplier aged 19 ish in summer holiday from uni. Most of my fellow, similarly aged, order-pickers were not at uni, shall we say. There was a small group who picked on another uni-going lad, much more well spoken than I. For some reason I was left alone.

Took a while to find out why . . . one of the lasses had been making conversation one day that they had over-heard. There must have been a question about parents - my dad had had a stroke and was retired, and my mum was a housewife.

Somehow they had heard "my dad's inside, and my mum's on the game . . ." They obviously thought I was hiding a rougher life than them

I didn't correct them . . .
