Low cost driveway pothole fix?

hi my daughter runs an exotic animal sanctuary in (wet) lincolnshire.
Their entrance toad / car park is quite a large area and seems to be hardcore/ plannings. As you'd expect it developed large potholes and refilling with plannings etc doesn't last too long with wet/ frost.
we have had the usual " "£10 a square FOOT" tar chipping people of course!!
As a " charity" cost always the issue so wondered if any ideas. Current thinking plannings packed with drymix 5:1?
I guess nothing other than proper road building is long term solution but it's rented land .

Where we just moved has a dirt road access. Everyone chips in now and again for some hardcore, but the potholes always seem to re-appear in the same place. As above, you need to dig out the pothole and pack it back with some extra.

There’s apparently an implement for the back of a tractor, a bit like a mulcher, which uses hammers to break up and re-lay the road surface. I can’t find what it’s called. If not too expensive I might get one to go on the JD 2650.

When I worked outside many years ago, as a “temporary”measure we used to chuck the old tarmac back in the hole smack it down, chuck some petrol on & set fire to it, then smack it down hard when hot. Don’t know if that would work with planings, depends how much tar is left I would think.

buy rd plannings and have it tipped in a collection area

its rented so if need be you can just refill the pot holes when needed with the plannings

its what id do with a farm built rd and also any type of access rds that need to be built for proper access

one other thing get permission that you can store rd plannings on site as reference to rd repair when the temporary rd fails and gets potholes it kinda covers your back if you need to get rid of them when the renting ends as the owner can then continue to refill the potholes

I've no idea about this on the mainland* but I've had success with concrete lorry washout poured onto compacted crushed rock. It helps that I know the lorry driver.

...and a 50/50 mix of diesel fuel and used motor oil afterwards.

Quite like the " fire" method that might help the patch bond a bit to the existing.
Looking out for cheap wacker plate ( including Aldi specials) as I think keeping on top of it is the way forward.
No point asking local council pot hole repairers really!.
Planeings usually ok for sourcing as there's a localish place who gives them cheapish prices due to zoo/charity.
Might be up there next week as they got mini digger so might try few burns to see difference over time.

ive filled potholes in with road plannings and went over 4 times with my big diesel whacker plate and they do not fall back out .4 people cant lift it

A towable grading bar will keep it in good order if you can get the track back into reasonable condition. A lump of rsj on chains behind a decent 4x4 or tractor is all you need.

They resurfaced the roads in a local village. They were supposed to draw the planings back to the quarry but none made it that far. The lorry driver was getting £40 a load from local farmers, etc.

He was making good beer money, the quarry was happy too as it saved the lorry wasting diesel drawing it back to the quarry.

Do a bit of research on road construction.
If it doesn't drain adequately from the base, it will very rapidly turn to a whole load of trouble....

Dig the pothole out and put a channel out to the verge to allow water out. Fill and whack down. Our old grader driver put channels in all the potholes, the repairs lasted longer

The hydraulic force of water, moved by tyre impact, is what makes potholes grow. Creating a drainage route(s) should ease things in the long term.

Road crushers. They are very hard on tractors and require a lot of horses to work properly especially depending on what's In The existing track.
Also work best with lime or cement mixed in to stabilise the ground

Your talking road restoration, its likea grinder that grinds up what ever is there, then lime over the top and rolled in. It then sets like concrete.expensive. A company called RTW road restoration do it, there are others. The bit for the back of the tractor is big money. And needs a big tractor.
Or you could use a box grader, and rip the surface, then re roll it.

A mini digger with a toothed bucket ripping around the pot hole and a whacker plate, with extra stone works well but is very slow.

To stop pot holes you need to grade the road so it drains, then your less likely to get pot holes.

If they can't afford (and fair enough if not as will end up decent money) to buy in or quarry out decent stone of varying grades and hire equipment to level and compact, just keep chucking whatever is free in the bottom of potholes.

A layer of what our quarry called 40mm scalpings is cheap to buy and compacts nicely. Won't be a decent job built with drainage and open, free draining base layers. But will tidy it up and stick light/non turning traffic for a while.

Cheap is a relative term…..for us the stone 40 mm scalpings or even type 1 isnt too bad, but add the haulage on an its now topping 20 quid a ton. And in real terms 20 ton doesnt go very far.
Plainings can be cheap is your near the road works and can take them straight from the job.
