Those days seem to be over, at least in my part of Wales, most go for recycling back into tarmac or other sub base type materialThey resurfaced the roads in a local village. They were supposed to draw the planings back to the quarry but none made it that far. The lorry driver was getting £40 a load from local farmers, etc.
He was making good beer money, the quarry was happy too as it saved the lorry wasting diesel drawing it back to the quarry.
I've bought 2 x 16t loads recently from a place in Cardiff, cost me £36/t delivered
Even farmers locally are struggling to get planings cheap
