Low cost driveway pothole fix?

They resurfaced the roads in a local village. They were supposed to draw the planings back to the quarry but none made it that far. The lorry driver was getting £40 a load from local farmers, etc.

He was making good beer money, the quarry was happy too as it saved the lorry wasting diesel drawing it back to the quarry.

Those days seem to be over, at least in my part of Wales, most go for recycling back into tarmac or other sub base type material

I've bought 2 x 16t loads recently from a place in Cardiff, cost me £36/t delivered

Even farmers locally are struggling to get planings cheap

The hydraulic force of water, moved by tyre impact, is what makes potholes grow. Creating a drainage route(s) should ease things in the long term.

If you've ever hydraulically punched a bush out with grease, you'll have seen it in action, and gained an appreciation of the shock transfer capability .....

if the pot holes are where water sits or runs over what ever you do wont last unl;esds you change the water corse put drainage in or cut a line where the water goes another way

i do drive way stuff at work every year filling pot holes with the cold tarmac where ever the water stands or runs it just goes after a few weeks even using the spray stuff that so say seals it


we got a damaged pipe through the course and the water runs over the drive ive tryed every thing to do more than a few weeks fix and notyhing has worked even planings wacked down lastered only a few days

Main culprits here are delivery drivers, pressed for time, splashing along like it’s a rally stage. Everyone who lives here drives at a leisurely crawl. Each splash takes a bit of the track with it.

Some advice from @addjunkie suggesting a box grader might be the next best thing to a planer:

membrane
Limestone 25-40mm
Then planings over that whacked down or better vibro roller.

If you've got water sitting then the planings will keep disappearing down into the ground.

Limestone drains well and doesn't bind together.

The planings will then protect the limestone from the degradation of vehicle traffic and weather.

Know what you mean about 10 tonnes not going far. Think their local place not bad on delivery but they did " donate" an ungraded load once. It was a bu**er to spread and pack due to the thickness of big pieces.
Whilst browsing Facebook market place ( from 3500 miles away) someone was selling the old style trench packer.
Wasn't the old single cylinder thing of my youth seemed to have little 2- stroke??

I'm not back in time to play with digger and fire so I'll ask for video!

They weren't little, if you are referring the one featured on a Shed and Buried that was tested and then abandoned. When used outside a trench and if you get careless Clown Shoes become necessary.

A 4 in 1 bucket is handy to for moving the gravel about to loose big holes. But what ever you do, unless its graded for water to run off, itll be like painting the Forth Bridge. Eventually youll get fed up and buy a 4x4.

The road is graded gently, but there is a slight hump just before the ditch. The potholes are mainly on the low side.

The hump though probably grassy will be a mix of stone, plainings and dirt, scrape it off so the water can make it to the ditch. You only get pot holes where water lies.
