Reckon we are possibly the only country on planet earth where a 6 year old diesel costs less to tax than an EV or a petrol hybrid. My daily driver 2017 diesel merc won't be hit thankfully so there is that. (It'll still be £35 a year)
Nothing changed for 2017 or older cars? My 2009 Mazda 6, 2L band H, has been paying £300 a year for the last few years and its the same now.
On the face of it the changes seem to discourage buying new cars and encourages holding on to cars in the cheaper bands.
All seems a bit odd but maybe there is some greater objective at work?
Looks as though my M2 is going from £185 per year to £385 per year, I wonder if cancelling my road tax in March and getting a refund for the remainder of the year then just retaxing it prior to April would get a full year at the old rate, think I might try that as I hate tax with a terrible vengeance.I havent compared the others but I think H is the same...

Its damned silly that a clean 2L petrol, with direct injection and efficiency etc.. costs more than any stinking diesel krautbox.
As its CO2 based, and making a new car is extremely bad for that, it makes sense to me. More likely however, the idea, if you can afford a new car, you can afford lots of tax. I quite like that ideaOn the face of it the changes seem to discourage buying new cars and encourages holding on to cars in the cheaper bands.

Yea I guess it sounds great at the moment...until we're pushed into buying new cars which have higher VED!More likely however, the idea, if you can afford a new car, you can afford lots of tax. I quite like that idea
I read an article lately on the subject of the CO2 emissions of making a new Diesel car and was surprised that around 50% of the entire emissions from that car if it lived to 10 years was from the making of the car, the other 50% was from the exhaust, so holding onto a car is far better for the environment than buying a new car, so it seems that taxing a used car more is just a money extorting tax grab, not that I’d expect anything other than that from this current lot.As its CO2 based, and making a new car is extremely bad for that, it makes sense to me. While I agree to a point. I think you will find in reality its just another inflationary driver. The politics of envy.
I think when you buy a new car there should be a set rate of VED...and there should be a set formula for increases based on say the rate of inflation so people know exactly where they stand over the ownership cycle of the vehicle. While I agree to a point. That’s too simple, you are talking about politicians here.I think when you buy a new car there should a set rate of VED...and there should be a set formula for increases based on say the rate of inflation so people know exactly where they stand over the ownership cycle of the vehicle.
Sadly very true...always tinkering and meddling! That’s too simple, you are talking about politicians here.
Seems these will just rise at the inflammation rate. Mine goes from £415 to £435 so not too damaging to the finances in the grand scheme of things.Nothing changed for 2017 or older cars? My 2009 Mazda 6, 2L band H, has been paying £300 a year for the last few years and its the same now.
