They have a point, there's a problem with a decline of some bird species out here, feral cats are part of the problem but not normally mentioned.
I say that as a cat owner. In my cat's defence it's a mammal hunter, rarely does it bring a bird in. When it does it's puzzled as to what to do with it. If it hunted birds I'd probably put a bell on it, or something similar.

We live in the country, and , "sort of" have a cat that is semi feral, and we have had a few, sometimes more than one, over the years.
As any cat owner will tell you, they sometimes like to bring their victims indoors. I had to think about this for a bit, but I can honestly say that ours have only brought in one bird that I can remember, and it was a Great Tit that was ill because it had a massive tick on the side of its face. We got the tick off, but it died anyway.
Ours always seem to be rodent hunters. We have had plenty of mice, rats, and the odd young rabbit, and a squirrel (grey) brought indoors. I am not saying that they have never caught birds, but judging by what we have seen, birds certainly are not their main target. We feed the birds a lot, with feeders and a table covered with an old dog transport cage to keep the Sparrowhawks off. The cats will sit out in the garden, and seeming take no notice, not even of the ground feeders.
I have theory on this though. In cities, towns, suburbia, etc. People poison or trap as many rodents as possible, so there are not many left to occupy the cats time, coupled with a denser cat population, so they turn to birds instead. Another example of human interference ?
Then of course, there is pesticides ....... no insects for birds to eat, poisoning of slugs and snails, which are a big part of the Song Thrushes, and many other birds diet. Birds can eat them after they have ingested poison and die themselves. Birds of prey, and you cat can eat poisoned rodents too , which can make them very ill, or worse. Then there is the destruction of habitat, yet another example of human interference. All these things and more, contribute to the declining bird population.
Then you get those stupid people whotorment play with their cat, with a stick with a ball of feathers on the end

We have a cat who is a sporadic hunter, he usually eats his kill .
However this is more of a worry than the occasional kill, a pesticide in animal flea treatment has been found to cause fatalities in birds.

Not true, was typical anti Scottish propaganda first published by the Torygraph/ Daily Mail : No, they’re not. In fact, the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission report which the newspaper article was based on does not even contain the word “ban”.
A ban on owning cats is not proposed in the recommendations from the report, which instead calls for Scottish Ministers to “introduce a coordinated campaign for responsible cat ownership and care”.

All of mine, down the years, could recognise the sound of cold meat being opened or unwrapped from the far side of the house or field.
A couple of them really got good at hooking a flying slice of ham out of the air.

My one knows when the chopping knife comes out the drawer and makes himself a trip hazard in the middle of the kitchen floor waiting for chicken, unfortunately for him it's sometimes a veggie dish being made

I try to keep separate the concept of an independent Scotland from the current clowns in power. To paraphrase Blair, they aren't fit to lead a parish council, but then are any of them anywhere?
My errant cat friends leg bone has been popped back into the hip socket without problem. Radiography shows no damage to the hip socket or the femoral head so if all goes well he should be up and fighting again in two weeks. Only he wont be fighting so much because when I collect him tomorrow he will be missing two conspicuous items from below his tail. He will also be vaccinated and I asked them to do the bloods to check for feline FPV, the previous incumbent was also a stray and he had FPV, I suspect this one might as well. He is not going to like two weeks of incarceration but he will put up with it I think.

No, its a country practice and they make a good earner from equine and bovine medicine, they are merciful to pet owners, thankfully.
I think you are correct, I have noticed it before with previous pest control officers that needed treatment for things causing them pain.
