Started to dismantle my Stihl MS361 because I wanted to make a very good restoration video for my YouTube channel.
And knowing the amount of work behind a complete chainsaw rebuild (bottom+top end carburetor plus aesthetics) I've decided to film the disassembling in advance so parts can go in the diesel bucket for 2 or 3 weeks for deep cleaning.
Discovered I have to weld the crank case because the oil tank is cracked.
I have few options but all of them have both advantages and disadvantages.

Option 1 get a Tig welder
Advantages I can do better video clips, including arc shots, not having to rush or begging my boss for using the little selco after work at my workplace.
Disadvantages having to delay the video to at least June to get properly set up because I have other expensive things going on (started today my workshop build)

Option 2 buy new aftermarket crankcase
Advantages quick solution, no prep, no finishing required, no painting.
Disadvantages they are not cheap, they take time to arrive anyway, possible custom duties to pay, not genuine, and most importantly I cannot prove guys saying I'm not able to do that, they're wrong.
I've commented another video time ago, the YouTuber had a lot of struggle welding a chainsaw casting and I've shared my opinion including parameters etc.
His viewers attacked me so it's personal....

Option 3 ask my boss if I can weld this thing at work.
Advantages proper Tig welders available, sure I can get nice results.
Disadvantages, most likely I cannot film any clips, my boss would start asking about this chainsaw, he would most likely think it's a commissioned job, ruining the trust built in the last 3+ years.
He would surely overcharge for the job

Option 4 epoxy
Advantages quick solution maybe
Disadvantages I'm pretty sure it would not hold up, it will surely leak, I'm not a pig I'm proud of my job and tools I cannot do that without feeling guilty and bad with myself.
If I watch the video from the viewers prospective I would instantly click the unsubscribe button because it's ruining the chainsaw, and completely destroy the video.
Plus the up mentioned folks from the other channels would be right


So I'm going to delay this restoration.

Finished my main work bench today. It's 2.6m long and 600mm wide with the return coming out to 100mm to make room for the hacksaw to fit underneath it.

Yesterday, made a stand for my paint gun cleaning station. This thing is great, much cleaner than messing about with a couple of mix pots of solvent and rags.
It uses the dirty solvent to wash through the gun, this then drains into a 25l drum underneath the station and gets recycled next time you use it. Then a separate smaller pot of pure solvent to rinse the parts. Operated from air. I'm almost looking forward to the next painting job... almost!

Yesterday my heater is running out of material because a chain broke.
Pita to repair.
Fortunately got a spare chain and some links.
And also some bushings.

Made life easier today by keeping relevant equipment where it will be used.

Press ganged a half turned wood bowl into use as a "stand" for the head shield for the wood lathe. Glued and screwed to a few offcuts and fastened to the grinding jig cabinet:



And in use it's perfect. No more having to look for where I left it, and as it's the right way up it won't get dust on the inside:



And it's given me the inspiration to make something similar to store my welding helmets above the welding bench.

And I also turned the other of the 2 ash/sapele bowls I recently started, and cleaned up a small iroko bowl:




And had a play, albeit too late for this Christmas, at making wooden snowmen:



The smaller ones are turned from Sycamore but the one in the middle was a lump of Hawthorn that I picked up for the log burner!

today i started a christmas break project that i've been planning for a while.

because mazda are a pita and have a brake master that you can't put a pressure bleeder onto, i've been meaning to make a one man brake bleeding kit in the form of a remote control brake depressor. it's a simple beasty, just a lot of fab work. the steel stock is all old offcuts i have kicking around from other projects, so cost me nothing.

should work fine as long as the piston has enough stroke to push the pedal all the way down.

After spending the morning on the Vito, fixing rust holes on the cab roof...
I've discovered that I didn't worked once on my 126p during 2024.
So in the evening I've removed the front bonnet from it and took it home.
After little bit of hitting here and there with a screwdriver I've found pretty extended rust damage, for some reason I'm not able to upload images I'll try later.
Anyways on tomorrow I'll start to repair the holes.
I'll most likely have to buy another one but I'll do my best to save the bonnet and most importantly save 300 euro myself

Most people seem to like 850-900mm but i've always made mine a little taller so I can fit stuff underneath.

Isn't that 3 draw cabinet on the left going to be annoying, sticking out like that?

It's only shoved under there out of the way. It holds all the gears for my hobber so it'll go in the section of workshop where the hobber lives.

I think with a workshop bench height it's handy to consider if you want to work sitting on a stool next to it.

I had thought about 850ish too, so that’s what I’ll go for.
I remember the benches in your last workshop were quite tall too. I always wondered if the height was dictated by your plethora of Bisley cabinets!

That looks like Italian steel !, I remember a mates 3 year old Strada that had holes like that in the roof
