I reckon if you could coax a swan into building a nest in your workspace you would be sorted.

I can remember some guy on a riverbank trying to walk past a nest and having to use a casing off a back of a tv (no i don't know either) to fend it off.

I hear they can break some bones with their wing beat, mabye an urban myth?

Thanks for the replies so far.
These workshops are on the edge of civilisation but half a mile from the main road.We have gates out at the road.On Saturday night they did one of the buildings which is obviously alarmed.First of all they stuffed the padlock so a key would not go in.Then they stihl sawed through the cladding on the building,then hammered a hole through the breeze block inner wall.All that appears to be missing is a few lengths of copper pipe,so of no consequence really.
But,it meant that on Sunday at 7am I had to walk in and take a forklift and gas bottles out to the end of the road and blow the padlock of the gate.I then had to gas weld the cladding back in as I couldn`t re-sheet it as with the wall behind it there is no access to put nuts on and tek screws are a waste of time.
So,instead of getting two orders out the door on Sunday I lost a day for less than £100`s worth of copper.
The worrying bit is that now they`re using a Stihl saw nowhere is secure.
This is the reason for the smoke and noise deterent.I have two other buildings on the same site.Dogs are the best but not suitable for here.Geese are a waste of time,they would come from far and wide to shoot them.Trip wires and similar devices are also not suitable for this application,what we need is something that makes it impossible for them to stay in the building,something that happens within seconds of entry and can be controlled by sensors.
I am aware of a company down by Lincoln who do the fog machines but wondered if anyone had first hand experience.

its no myth nowt worse than a swan with a cob on they are powerfull and large

One was in a confined shopping street some time ago in a residential area...

It was propper unhappy and one "big bloke" thought he could grab it and move it, it broke his arm in 3 to 4 places with one flap...

It was only "miffed" as it couldn't get a clear run to take off

I have a couple which I purchased from my local sports "gun" shop. quite legal they work on a trip wire which fires what looks like a short 1" blank shotgun cartridge, need I say if you were in close proximity when this went off in an enclosed area, your eardrums would be whistling for a few days after, can be heard a mile away.

I have a few,
mount @ chest hight a few ft in from entry, hide it behind thin paper. Use a 500w PIR halogen lamp pointing straight at them so they are dazzled & can't see the trip wire (nylon fishing line).
They will be disorientated by sight & sound, so arrange some badly stored heavy lumps on wobbly shelves + stuff on the floor like garden rakes, you get the idea.
If they come calling they need to go home with something - PAIN & BLOOD LOSS

Nb - The alarm gun is painfull @ 20ft with earmuffs

How do you know where they`re going to enter when they`re hacking through walls to get in?
One building is 120ft long,the others are 100 and 80ft respectively.These are engineering workshops/machineshops,you can`t have swans,geese etc running about.

The Halon fire extinguisher system looks worth some investigation but probably illegal.Unfortunately you`re not allowed to gas,electrocute or otherwise exterminate scum nowadays.

Mmmm Halon has been banned since 2002. Pity.

Trying to protect buildings that large is a thankless task, where ever you increase security they will find the next weak spot. I know geese are very very good guard dogs, as a child we had a farm, that kept been broken into, the old man got 20 geese, never got broken into again. As for keeping them inside not a chance you would be faced with goose ****e everywhere in the morning, and boy can they poo.

You need to understand alarm systems are reactive, ie "they" have to be INSIDE for it to activate. This is no good at all, the battle is lost.

You need Proactive, ie Magic eyes around the outside of the buildings linked to lots of lights and sirens, that way the system "sees" them before they are anywhere near your property after that vibration detectors, on walls doors roofs etc.

He replaced them with metal gas pipe, the heavy black mild steel stuff, but before he welded the angle to the ends he dropped a length of 20mm dia round bar down each pipe.
The hacksaw would cut through the outer until it touched the inner bar, that would then just revolve.
I know it won't help if your premises are out in the wild but any tricks are worth knowing.

They are awesome bits of kit, BUT, 99% of them require a permanant power source, so if they know you've installed either they will merely cut the power and wait for the smoke cloak to empty itself.

the ultimate cheap way to deal with pinching scrotes.
i have various outbuildings with very expensive welders with no one around.
pir sensors are battery powered can be tweeked down so cats dogs birds don't set them off so no false alarms.
the alarm is silent on site but it rings yer mobile if you answer you can listen in to the action.
same alarm controller triggers cctv with dvr recorder with sd card memory.
none of it was that expensive.
its up to you how you deal with the outcome.
they worked for me big time scrote got 18months he he.
don't be a victim ,technology rocks.

That's a pretty good idea, i'm sure a petrol powered abrasive saw would jam it and cut through tho.

Yep, not only are any 'mantraps' highly illeagal but as you say more likely to kill yourself when you forget to deactivate them, i remember a story about a guy who used a shotgun loaded with folded paper balls......it still nearly killed him when he forgot about it.

It is not worth the risk!

My garage security is pretty simple, a volvo V70 backed up against the garage door which is alarmed and handbrake locked.
(along with the usual padlocks and i have a hidden lock too)

We have premises protected this way,but just a total waste of time for the ones we are discussing.A phone call to tell you that your premises have been entered is no use when you are thirty miles away.It is also no use to the police as they will attend to the gate at the end of the road half a mile away.CCTV is no use when thieves wear hoods and balaclavas.
