You could use a bag of castable refractory lining to repair that, it would outlast the stove.

Ooooh no. You wanna rip out that wooden mantle as its a dangerous fire risk. Square off all the edges, plaster over all the exposed brick, and slosh some shades of grey paint everywhere. Then finish off with some cheap (but expensive) MDF furnitureWell it's where I'm happiest...
