Bearing / Hydraulic Press question....

I've read a few threads on Press equipment, & I have mulled over whether I could do with one (admittedly not often unless they are far more versatile than I know)...
The hardest job I envisage might be hub centre bearings on my 3.5t van, or the car etc, so in theory not that big a Press.... but then ive also heard that even these (by engineering standards) small jobs can need a 20-tonne pressure to shift??
I'm keeping an eye out for a local used item - with zero urgency, but it's kinda one of those tools that you just feel you'd like to know is there.

Any thoughts / advice?

I went thro the same thought process....bought mine about 3-4 years ago. I've never used it and now it sits in my loft .

I guarantee it will be needed the day after it's gone!

For automotive I would go for the biggest one you can get your hands on, hubs can be an awkward thing to mount so the more room you have on the bed the better, 20 ton would deal with most jobs.

Once you have a press you'll wonder how you ever got by without one.

20T will do most things

in the garage i would use the clarke press 10 ton press floor standing model

in another garage they have another type that is also floor standing ebay blue one

from using the garage one on many vans and cars and landys for those bushings they was a great tool to have

so i bought one myself a bench type it stands more in the corner of the shed than used but they are far easier to have one than not have one

I've noticed that the cheaper ones seem to have a fixed centre positioned ram, where others have a laterally moveable ram? I imagine this is more useful/usable as you can get to Press something that is offset?

You're into the realms of a few grands worth of press if you're looking at travelling head hydraulic presses

I have recently done the front wheel bearings on my Master. I have an old Churchill 10 ton floor standing thing, and it coped easily. Went with a bang though.
A 20 Chinese ton one would be better though, and if you buy one, get one with a ram, not one with a jack mounted on a carriage, as they wobble.

A press is one of those things that you dont use that often at first, but if you can find space for it, its one of those tools that you can't imagine how you managed before. You soon find many things to use it for.

I've seen images of ones where the ram looks to sit on two horizontal plates on edge, so I thought the ram could just be slid manually off-centre?
Are they really that expensive? That's not an option for me!

no that doesn't work like that

A travelling ran press usually rides on roller bearings, then you clamp the head in position either mechanically or hydraulically.

As said above the press is twice as heavy duty due to the load it could see on one side of the press.

The cheap ones will be cost-engineered so they have a capacity of 5kg over their rated value.

When you put 20t on a central ram, each side of the press sees 10t. If you move the ram to one side or the other, that side will see nearly the full 20t, so the pins and thickness of material need to be correspondingly bigger and the cost higher.
