Bearing / Hydraulic Press question....

A hydraulic press has a multitude of uses, some subtle, some less obviously so, and some utterly barbaric.
I've used my 15 ton floor standing unit for forming, disassembly, assembly, and broaching of keyways.
It also doubles up as a mighty large and adaptable vice of great delicacy when used with resilient platens.
As many uses as your imagination can devise, although not in the same league as a shaper.....

There is always another way to get the job done. Any normal automotive bearing should not need a great deal of pressure for installation. Don’t need a press for most bearing removal operations. All small stuff can be sorted with a decent sized vise.

I broke too many vices in my lifetime doing this - I just don't do it now.

Problem with vehicle wheel bearings is - getting the stub out - once this is out - you can weld shrink the bearing and hammer it out - and yes you can nip in the new bearing with a vice.

It the stub that is the problem.

Apart from just pressing stuff you can get/make some useful accessories for a press.
I've got a guillotine and a box folder.
Obviously they are not very wide compared to the floor standing versions but the working height is perfect to see exactly what you are doing

I did wonder if CLH had presses, but as their primary work wasn't mechanics as such, I wasn't sure. I think 150t might be overkill for anything I'll ever tackle mind!

You'd be surprised. Used Matty's 150t one on the wheel bearing for the Range Rover. It wasn't so much the force (I think it went bang at 7t) but the sheer size of it.

I could have got it into my press but I'd have had to make a socking great big table to support it as mine I think was used for tank gearbox bearings. Matty's table was wide enough (about 7.5") to fit the hub between the sides and then we could slide some old manitou plates in from the sides to support it.

If you buy the Sealey type - you will need a 30ton press to do van hubs.

Plus only buy the type with the extra wider bed as a standard width press bed is hard work for getting van stubs thru as at @8ob has highlighted above.

Only car/van pressing job this has ever failed me on was a Renault Master hub.

That is a very old picture of my press (20yrs old maybe?) - I have just had to fill the ram with "stop leak" and it has worked a treat - cleaned ram up and filled with this stuff.

Loving that fix, my jack type press had a weap when I bought it second hand, years later it's still in use weap & all but the solutions on the way

Do you mean you use your press with a guillotine attachment? Same question for the box folder. I'd be interested to see photos.

Yes, basically a normal 'H' type hydraulic press then I have a guillotine and a folder.
(2 seperate things)
They basically just sit onto the bottom rails of the press and then you use the press as normal to drive them.

I think the guillotine is technically a shear but same sort of thing.
I'll take some photos tomorrow..

The folder is a length of brake tooling sitting in a groove in a plate. It's removable so you can change it for different ones.
Top tooling, a single piece and a set of teeth for box/pan. Not really any need for both as the box/pan covers the same width as the single.
There is an attachment coupling to hold it to the ram. The arm sticking out the back just slots into a reciver with a clamp so it doesn't move when you drag sheet across it.

The gullotine/shear is a thing I made up to do some precision cutting hence the guides
Works the same way.
