Hacked Facebook Account

You know when some one watches a program and says I would not fall for that scam.

Well I might be that person.

A guy I used to communicate with when on a Facebook group for a caravan site posted in a group.

Reckons he has got a place on a college course. Asks if anyone has a website he can use to be taught SEO and Marketing.
3 of us replied he messaged me saying my site looked as if he could work with it.
But said it needed 50 quid in Word press plugins.

Quite possibly it could. So I sent him 50 quid as he reckoned he had asked his tutor if the college would pay. They wouldn't.
We were chatting about the site and he mentioned he needed to go and let his daughter know she could not go out with her nan the next day as it would cost 15 quid and he only had 33p in the bank..

Second mistake I sent him 15 quid.
Anyway 2 days go by and he says he is hoping to jump on the site tomorrow.

But it's not sure the course will be going ahead as two other students could not get sites. And suggested if he could get 100 quid they would work wonders on the site.

ALARM bells finally rang. Next it was his daughters birthday and the present she wanted was 27 quid. But he was getting 15 quid tomorrow so only needed 12 quid.

At that stage I am now convinced the real Brad shaw has been hacked.........
Does anyone know much about confirming if a Facebook account has been hacked if you have no other way of contacting the person.

One unusual part is the Bank transfer was to an account called Brad Shaw.

Any suggestion other that LOL "YOU DUMMY"

I can’t say I’ve had any experience of this personally, only through a colleague at work who this happened to but was in the order of many thousands rather than £65. I am led to believe he very luckily got it back by speaking with the bank.

The best way is to speak with the person the account belongs to, see if they realise it’s hacked. Probably a waste of time reporting to fb, doubt anything will happen…
He probably messaged everyone that replied to that post…

That's the problem. I don't know how to contact the real Brad Shaw.

Oh and upon checking I find the bank account is a CHASE Bank account.

would it be worth while contacting the admin of the FB group and see if they can do anything ?

Is his friends list public? You could message a few of them to say you think his account might have been hacked could they contact him to check.

Perhaps he has not been hacked and is just a scrounger? I've known a few people like that and been caught out too when I was younger.

That is a level 2 scam.

I'd just walk away from it and put it down as a lesson learned. the damage has already been done rather than chasing your own tail and getting wound up about what has happened.

Couple of years ago I had a message through Messenger from a good friend of mine in London, late one evening. He is a solicitor, lives 300 yards from the London Eye, so not short of a bob.

The message said something about being on a long car journey, cards won’t work, and can I quickly shove him £300 for a day. Bank account details were given.

I immediately picked up my phone, started the transfer, then stopped for a second, thought about his message, it didn’t sound the sort of wording he would ever use. I sent him a question, got the answer that his battery was at 2% so couldn’t chat.

I refrained from sending the money.

Ten minutes later I get a message from his niece, saying not to send money, he has been hacked.

Someone had sent him a message asking “Is this you in the video?” and when clicked on it asked him to log on, so he did. Bingo. Someone else had his log in details.

Six people got the request for money, but only one sent it….

You’d think the police could simply trace the owner of the bank account the money was sent to, wouldn’t you?

"I need key words for your site."

So....I am in a situation where I will/have upset the real Brad Shaw or given the scammed warning I am on to them...

Have no further contact and report the profile to Facebook. It's really not your problem and you are such a kind, thoughful and trusting person that you are likely to be scammed again. Besides which, what sort of friend would tap you up for money? Not a friend in my view, even if genuine.

Does the college course really exist? Could you contact the college and enquire? IF so, ask the tutor about it.

I'm mighty suspicious they need anyone's website details - surely they can create their own website (Perhaps to advertsie the college course!) and improve the SEO of that, to prove all of the points they need to.

Regardless, I'd be damned if I'd let anyone practice on our websites - you might be surprised how much damage can be done by someone amending keywords adhoc - Google will take a very dim view, and you can end up in the mire.

2 things will happen:
you get your £65 and (maybe) hurt the feelings of someone you never see
or
you get a long and convoluted story why they can’t give you the money back right this minute but if you can send them more money they’ll see you right…
and you’ve got a life lesson for the very very reasonable price of £65.

Interesting. I already know I would not get the £65 back. Hes been honest and said it is on his **** suffering from mental health issues. I would not expect the £15 back as I gave that to his daughter (or for her).

AS for a life lesson.........................I feel that I am getting good advice but for some reason I dont want to take it. I am totally stupid I know. I know I am stupid as I dont really need good SEO as the website is more of a method of providing a conduit for cut/print/laser ready content AFTER the user/buyer is sent a link to access the site.
Part of the reason is I am still not in the position to sell anything from the site with regularity or quality.
SO not taking the advice is so not sensible its almost crazy not to .....as if I am expecting it to not be a scammer and a miracle will come out of it.

Ask this person questions about how you know eachother or specific details on the way you Met. Any questions that a hacker wouldn’t know.

It's entirely your call and nobody else's. You're a decent guy that wants to help someone.

I still wouldn't hand over my credentials - as you're potentially putting more at risk than £50.
I definitely wouldn't be handing over the extra £100
I'd probably need a receipt for the wordpress plug-ins, 'for accounting purposes'.

Just imagine how bad people could get scammed if they used your website to scam potential customers that want stuff made.

No, because he's going to send me £150, and I will be able to prove categorically if he's been scammed, or not!!
