Its healed NOT BAD. Well they done a good job of it to be honest. Have a bit of movement in it, but no feeling... I can burn it with my lighter until it starts smelling rotten and i wont feel a thing!
That was in 2008, im 21 now and i have learnt my lesson haha....
Well I say that, but when i got back from A&E to tell the MD ill be off for 8 months, i caught him bolting the safety guarding back onto the press! How f**ked up is that?!

Hhahaha, well the **** take was, It was a 10,000 meter job, I think i was on something like 9,850m LOL!
They found the skin complete with nail attached in the press..
But on a SERIOUS note.
Everyone play it safe, i know PPE is a pain in the ass, but its there for a reason. Eye protection, steel capped boots, gloves and especially no loose clothing when working on or near moving machinery...

Yep, i hear you mate! But unfortunately that's how it goes in all the big plants...
All of our presses turn without safety guard i guess.... just hope i'm not there when the sh1t hits the fan...(i passed the first aid course this year)

But we all know how those are applied in those big plants, especially you Stu... We're tired of asking, pleading for a better, safer workfloor....After a while the operators don't care anymore, they shut up and do their work! nuffin more...

Dont get me wrong, the accident was deemed not my fault as it was due to "improper training" as my solicitor put it. Didnt help with pressure from the suits to use less set up paper, run jobs faster with less errors. I could understand if i was running something like a Mark Andy 330 8 colour with auto registration. But, I was running a ****ty Edale 250s 8 colour haha!
Im pretty careful about safety now, Ive seen a lot of accidents in my current job... Well i say current but ive been a mechanic at various bowling centres for roughly 4 years, Ive seen fingers get smashed by bowling balls, arms and fingers ripped off etc etc.
I tend to use the whole "if it aint safe, dont do it" approach. Not taking that to the extreme but we all take risks every day within our job, its the risks that I deem way unsafe or high risk of personal/colleague injury that I dont take anymore.
Its a pretty weird industry to be in to be honest, id love to trade it all to get some job as a machinist or with an engineering company, like welding or something but with the times as bad as they are at the moment, and thousands loosing their jobs as the weeks pass, I doubt this will happen any time soon.
If youve ever wondered how the bowling "machines" work, i got vids on my youtube account, or if you ever find yourself in London, PM me and ill give you a walk around the place, bring a few mates and free bowling/ice skating (if its not busy) wont be a problem!

On the machines we used to use you couldn't get near the anilox roller without stopping the machine as the covers had limit switches on them. If you tricked the limit with an elastic band you could do yourself some real damage though. One bloke managed to peel the skin off his hand completely and they had to graft his palm by sewing his hand to his backside. It was successful but he grew hair on his palm after that which was an embarrassment for him so he always wore a glove like Michael Jackson.

ooh thats nasty.. Seen someone catch their hand in a Lithographic press... wow, that was proper nasty, nothing but bone exposed.

once while i was in the andrew (royal navy) we had to help out with a local show type thing. after putting up some tents i was told to start blowing up ballons. unfortinatly along came a sailor who every one hated andwith a lit smoke started popping some of my ballons. soto get my own back I nipped over to the engineering dept and filled a few ballons up with oxyact and put them up. after lunch along comes matey boy with another smoke and................................................................................................. bang tent goes up with him inside it no hair left any where on his body along with no uniform shirt and rather red looking skin. He had a nevouise brakedown shortly after(apperintaly he had been over in ni and hadbeen morterd)

Last week a local farmers son got his foot caught up in a pumpkin harvester, apparently he spent 40 minutes laying there trying to stop himself being dragged into the machine, bracing his uncaught leg against the frame, the machine still running.
Only when the drive belt burnt out did that ordeal end, it is unclear how long it was before someone noticed the machine hadnt moved and went to investigate, it took however 2 1/2 hrs for the emergency services to extricate him, a local farmer was called in to dismantle the machine as much as possible to aid this, but he has still lost his foot at least from below the knee all because apparently the feed unit had jammed and he tried kicking it to free it.
So please BEFORE you need to unblock, adjust or carry out a service or grease up on machinery DISENGAGE, SHUT DOWN, STOP ENGINE and apply BRAKE EVERY TIME.
It drives it home everytime something like this happens, and just how lax we can be and just a moments lapse in concentration can have life changing implications, not only for you but your family also.

My bro in law who used to be a sheet metal plate printer did your trick in a sheet metal printing press ... it got to his wrist on his right hand before someone stopped it . He now has a lovely cold plastic hand with all sorts of wierd springy attachments .
This happened in 1970 , there were no guards in those days , the off button was five feet off the floor at the opposite end of the 12 mrt long print press.
He forgot the golden rules of switch off the machine and put the key in your pocket Or remove the fuses .. leave a notice on the machine saying who you are and what you have done and where you are likely to be.
Now most companies should be using permit to work systems ..use them as well .... not instead of the personal precautions.
Had another mate who climbed inside a centriflugal concrete sewer pipe making machine during tea break possibly to check a bearing on a high speed conveyor belt's rollers to see if it was overheating .
The key was left in the machine , tea break over someone closed the access door & started the machine up , sent him along with 6 tonnes of fairly dry concrete mix into the centriflugal mould via a beater bar set .. a big red stain and little else was found of him .
No one heard his screams for the noise in the plant is phenominal.
Coroner inquiry + misadventure .. It was his own fault , he did not adhere to the laid down safety rules .

First nasty one I saw was as an apprentice. Sand plant in the foundry used conveyor belts to move the sand around and it would eventually build up on the drive drums and push the belt off, so the labourers job was scraping the sand off while the drum was being "inched" round. He thought it would be quicker if he did it with the belt running, first we knew was when one of the conveyors tripped and stopped all the other belts. Sparky I worked with found his boot with foot still in it we left the works engineer and police to collect all the other bits scatterd the length of the belt!.

Pigeon, You cannot turn off a print press when you get a blemish appear on the print... It has to be done with the press running as when its off, the plates and anolix's dont turn.
I was doing what I was trained to do, I won a court settlement against it and it was ruled that I was incorrectly trained.
Such a shame because I really loved working with print presses. Loved every second of that job!
I remember once seeing some pikies hanging around a compactor at a scrap yard, Didnt think much of it until I heard the pump start whirring away and then hear the screams and the "SHUT IT OFF".
Never did hear anything about that so have no outcome to it!
Its such a shame now days, especially in my industry.. Mechanics are hurt all the time because to clear jams, the machine needs to be running.
The machines at the bowling centres (what i work on) dont look like much when your up at the front throwing balls at it, but when you get at the back, You see a whole different side of things.
