Those pelican catches look like they might well do the job and be small enough

They might not have a lot of adjustability. If you are putting them through a chain link, you can only change the length by 1 link at a time. What happens if the ideal tension is 37 1/2 links?

Maybe the thing to do is set them up first and then fabricate the other two normally non-adjustable ones at the front to suit.

Hope that makes sense: when building it, tie the grill down in the opposite order to what you would normally do.

Alternatively, fix the eyes onto the grill to suit the best chain lengths rather than fit the eyes and then try to make chains to suit.

You move the looped end on the other side of the trailer 1 link, that moves the whole chain 1/2 link.
Like a pulley.

personaly with me

id buy some chain and fit a hook on one end of the chain and still lash the lot down with normal ratchet straps

as its only a spacer chain and thats it to keep the heat away from the straps

Re the pelican hooks, im sure i have seen some that had a rigging screw end on them or you could just stick a rigging screw on the end of one with a shackle. Similar though far larger hooks were used to hold lifeboats ready for launching, a smack with the big hammer & the boat was released.

I am guessing what a rigging screw is, so sorry if this is incorrect.

Im familar with what your describing, but not sure what they are called. But with mr google try hammer pelican sliphook. Or lifeboat lashing turnbuckle.

I think I can overcome the lack of adjustment on a pelican clamp by swapping the lashing hoops in the van with some eye bolts. I can run a nut up the eye bolt first so I can lock it in place at a suitable distance.

My only concern is it looks like the pelicatches go over-center. So I'll have to pull it tight first and I'm not sure if that will work with chain as nothing will have any stretch in.
Then I think they might go slightly loose when fitted?
I've also a second machine that is not the same size so I might well need a second set of at least one end if I wanted to secure that one as well.

This is swaying me back to the modified ratchet straps. I can put a heat break on one end easily enough.
I don't even think I would need a heat break to protect the webbing but I think plastic coated clips on the end will melt although uncoated ones are easy enough to find.
The problem with ratchet straps is they can potentially melt or burn and I wouldn't be surprised if someone ends up coiling it up neatly before putting it on top of the hot machine...

You use link no. 38 and twist the chain.

as ive already said id just buy a length of chain and fit these types of hooks onto one end of the chain

then id use normal ratchet straps to fasten from the chain to the rings on the vehicle

as you are fitting metal hoops onto the heated part

the above is all you need to get space away from the heated unit and therefore no need to strap over the unit while its still hot

I couldn't find decent ones the right size so bought some suspiciously cheap ones.
Had to grind the beak down a bit to fit through the chain I was using.
Hinge pin is a bit small but I'll worry about that if they break.

As mentioned, no adjustment but I've covered that with the eye on the van side and they tension up fine

If you make a chock block across the 2 wheels, would help keep the back and forth
when driving, trying to loosen the chains.

The wheels on one end of the machine have brakes, did a couple of hours of driving last night on some rough roads and it worked fine!
