Well, not agreed, but a accepted that this is her wish, form filling wasn’t too much

Well in my case, objecting to animal testing as I do, it would be hypocritical to not do anything I could to offer an alternative. I have been thinking about it for some time, but John's passing pushed me to get it sorted.

Biggest hurdle was to manage the cultural / family expectation of a “normal “ funeral. Mum won’t have one of those

Her reasons are that she wants the medical world to understand her ailments so others don’t have to suffer

On the DVLA site now when you go through the online license renewal it asks if you are prepared to be an organ donor, which I think is a good thing.

A friend did this as well, donated his body to Aberdeen University.

When I last looked at this years ago it was down to the family to pay for & dispose of what was left after the cadaver had been harvested /researched .
Now both of us have paid for a Pure cremation we have asked for any bits of use to be removed for research before our body is burnt .

No free lunch there for anyone thinking they can skip the cost of a funeral.
Not that I'll be caring much at that stage.

Go bathing at high water in the Bristol channel you'll end up as shark & crab bait somewhere towards Cuba no funeral costs & family can have you declared dead tso they can claim any life insurances seven years after the disappearance.

I signed up for this some years ago. Amusingly, to me anyway, they won't pay my ferry fare, that will have to be paid by my estate. If I though having DNR tattooed on my chest was legally binding I'd have it done tomorrow. Powers of attorney have been set up for my spouse and spawn too. I've also discussed assisted dying with them and what my preferences are.

My father in law has done similar, click and collect he calls it, becoming far more common now due to costs. Not sure how it will affect the grieving process for those left behind as theres no final goodbye etc.

In the bbc news recently there was an article about this in the Netherlands, I was quite surprised by the numbers/ percentage. A very emotive subject, however youd not treat a dying pet the way some folk are treated.

Who's miserable? Miserable is watching someone die slowly and painfully knowing that it's illegal to help them end it.

And yes I am aware of the short tempered thread. It's why I've stopped posting as much. There's plenty on here that could be considered idiots, amazing isn't it.

I'd reckon that having a flat tyre on a motorcycle in the middle of Scotland, with it starting to snow, no tools, and a serious dose of the tom - tits would give most situations a good run for their money....

There's many variations on miserable available, planning that helps those dealing with one's inevitable death isn't one of them IMO.

A friend a has a clause in has advance directive, and I paraphrase, 'Consider me as you would a loved family pet and make decisions based on that.'

I'd signed up ages ago with the medical school I'm in the catchment for - seem to recall they will dispose of what's left once the students had finished playing practical jokes with what's left. I don't understand this pure cremation lark - do you hand them a chunk of money now; and when you croak, they fire up the oven etc. Seems in the years between you croaking and the fire, pure can earn extra from interest on your payment? Why not drop the cash into an ISA or something specifically for the funeral? Might earn enough extra to pay for many beers afterwards? Buying a crem compatible coffin off ebay, and a couple of phone calls to book a slot at the crem is hardly arduous. Last funeral I organised was so hassle free - just bought a plot on a green burial site, collected the deceased and tipped them into the hole, and adjourned to local pub (having pre-warned them the day before), and all got fed and watered via credit card tab behind the bar.

I think definition of misery is watching any episode of "Friends".

Both my parents gave their bodies to medical school for research. We were asked if we wanted the ashes back & if so it would be about 18 months. Bit funny really, we went to register the death of my father & the registrar said to my mother “now I have to ask, is it a burial or a cremation” to which my mother replied “actually neither” you could see it go through the registrar’s mind “are they going to have him stuffed or what” when we explained she said in the 15 years or so she had been doing the job there had only been one other. In both cases the medical school arranged & picked up the costs of cremation.
