What size of cable

The head on milling machine can be swung or raised/lowered and it is a stiff SWA cable that is on meantime between the vfd and motor. I would like to change it to a more flexi cable, probably screened or braided.
Just wondering what size of cable I should ask for please?
1hp motor.

You would be probably looking at SY cable and the appropriate glands if you wanted screened.
1hp is about 800watts so 1mm would be adequate!

An even greater amount of adequacy can be demonstrated by considering that as it is between a motor and VFD, it will be three phase, hence the current per conductor is lower than the same wattage in single phase.

Remember to ask four for core cable. If you had multiple machines, you might need to ask for forty four four core cables (and no candles).

In case you weren't aware, you need CXT cable glands, they have slots to trap the braid for bonding.

I have to ask, what that has frequency got to do with anything (at least in terms of cable sizing, in this case) ?

id use 1.5mm .well heavy enough and easier to work with than 1.0mm and more robust

I’d hazard a guess that 99% of the people that install SY aren’t aware given the number of stuffing glands on it.

Also I think you're only supposed to ground the screening at one (control?) end of the cable.

its only bonding so makes no odds . one end or both . the cable has its own earth core

Both very low or high frequency Will melt the wire if not big enough

Maybe something got lost in translation (Your English is about 1000 x better than my Italian though! I made an effort when I worked in Turin for a few months back in 2007, I love the language …) but the “frequency variation” isn’t really relevant in the case of a vfd. Just seemed odd to mention it.

I usually twiddle the braid, sleeve it and wago it to the other earths. All through a stuffing gland, because I have lots and they’re neat and waterproof. Is that bad?
