That’s a bodge.
They probably couldn’t find or make a replacement arch so they’re welded on those strips to connect the quarter panel to the inner wheel arch and used filler to bridge the gaps and build up the arch shape in the outside.
If you can’t/don’t want to have it all chopped out and done again I’d highly recommend cleaning off the surface rust, priming and paint that before moisture gets to it.
takes a lot of time n skill to repair wheel arches without ripples even if u can get the panel.....
even then the panels dont always fit.....
client bought a new front panel for this V dub...the original for the mold must have had a front end crash repair...
took over 10 hours to modify the new panel to fit.....

just do the best u can plus get some kinda wax under body treatment...spray....every thing helps....
ps....park the repaired panel in the sun for a while, it'll help the wax soak in....
It's a project car that will take me a good few years to work through but I will do bit by bit. It's an R32 GTR that's 32 years old so worth a fair bit and an appreciating asset. I imagine I'll get to that at some point and sort it properly but for now I'll clean it up and protect it.depends on value of car how much of a repair you do surely ? if its a beater and your main concern is mortgauge and food it will be secondary at the best .
That seems a very recent repair given the lack of rust on the metal?

I've had it for about a year but could have been repaired just before I got it.
Yeah, definitely is but will have to wait for now as repairing lots of rust in other areas at the moment! An R32 is worthy of having that inner arch replaced properly.
You don’t have to ask me twice for thoseWe need pictures of this, we like a bit of JDM.
It's a bodge....only one step up from newspaper backing....which is actually quite handy as it often dates the bodge. Is this a common thing to do to repair a rear arch or some kind of bodge?
Ah, GTR now thats a whole differant kettle of fish , well worth doing it properly , and congrats its my dream car so enjoy .It's a project car that will take me a good few years to work through but I will do bit by bit. Thanks man, yeah I’ve always loved them since owning various different models back in 2002. Had to sell each one as work, life and kids took over priorities but I can luckily now own one again, albeit a beaten up one, but I like to restoring things so that’s perfectAh, GTR now thats a whole differant kettle of fish , well worth doing it properly , and congrats it’s my dream car so enjoy .
That is exactly what I did when repairing the rear arch on my old LDV Convoy (except mine was all welded).Looks to me like they have bent an angle on a piece of sheet for a lip, and then had to pie cut it to bend it into a curve and then plaster the lot in filler.
Very much the "quick repair" rather than a "restoration". Almost certainly done just before being advertised for sale.
back in the day it was same for me, escort mexico s , meet girl ,sold , relationshit ends ,buy another...but envy you that ,happy days ahead for you , enjoy.Ahh yeah they do look like that, interesting find.
