The instructions say "put the red sensor into the + port"
The ports aren't marked + or -

What's a soot lamp?

I had what looked like a cheapskate version of that lamp in a chemistry set when I was little.

It allows a thin layer of black soot to be applied to metal.
Then you can mark up, or see where high spots are.

Think Engineers blue, but from 100 year ago.

I remember using smoked paper wound round a drum, with a sharp pointer scratching the results of your experiment (first year college stuff). After, the paper got removed and varnished.
